At this point it looks as if the Eu’s and Town are on top, close ly followed by Brown, and then the Cl’s, Phis, Melrose, Preach ers, and C-IPs. In the games through Thursday, the Town team has scored 566 points in 14 games for a 40.4 average per game. The Eu’s with 554 points in 144 games have a 39.6 average per game. Brown has scored 452 points in only 13 games for a 34.8 average per game. In the individual scoring de partment Clyde Walker, Town forward, with 156 points is lead ing the field at this writing; how- '®'’er, he is closely followed by ^111 Todd with 140 points. Curt Thompson with 130 points, and '*^6oil Sloan with 124 points. Sev- *^'al players on the various other teams are pushing their scores ^’oll up toward the 100 mark. Play in this intramural league •*'as been very good; it has fur bished entertaining pastime for players, managers, and spectators alike. The weakest point about the whole affair seems to be the '®i’y unsportsman-like attitudes displayed on the part of the play- spectators, and even the referees. Due to this fact the apirit of the games has not been bp to par, and the campus attitude bas been bitter. Uncontrolled tern havi pars and poor sportsmanship ® bo place on a basketball bourt. After all, the games are *^^ly played for recreation and ®btertainment. I the little shop with I BIG VALUES I I DAVID’S I I MEN’S SHOP I Brevard Brown, brilliant Mars Hill forward, led the Lions in a thrilling victory over the Hiwassee Quint on Saturday night, Feb ruary 12, on the Mars Hill court. The Lions rolled up a consider able margin in the first of the con test, and held a 65-41 edge when the game ended. Getting off to a fast start, the Lions held a 22-2 score at the end of the first quarter. Hiwassee, trying to get back in the game, rallied as the second quarter got under way, but the Lions remain ed hot and poured shot after shot through the nets to retain their lead. When the first half ended the Lions were leading by the score of 33-19. After the second half got under way the Lions rallied and took a larger lead. Although Brevard Brown scored 15 points in the first half, he came back in the second half to rack up a total of 21 points. With Brown setting the pace the offense, Steele, giant Mars Hill center, controlled the backboards for the Lions on de fense. The entire Mars Hill team played excellent basketball on de fense, keeping the Hiwassee play ers out from under the basket. The Mars Hill zone defense was working perfectly, and the visitors were forced to rely on long set shots to counter. Playing for Mars Hill were: Brown, 36; Parker, 3: Bennett, 4; Dunn, 2; Steele, 10: Pierce, 1 : Anderson, 4; Wal ker, 4; Shaver, 0: Helvey, 1. Editor’s Note: It has not been the policy of this paper to give individual recognition to members of the Athletic Association because we feel that all the “boys” de serve equal recognition. However, we feel that Brevard Brown’s record justifies recognition. We are quoting excerpts from Red Miller’s column, “Straight Talk,'’ i published in the Thursday, Feb ruary 17, issue of The Asheville Citizen.) “Last Saturday night Emmett Sams, our very reliable reporter of things athletic at Mars Hill col lege, called to report results of the Mountain Lion tussle with Hiawas- see. Things went along fine until Emmett said ‘Brevard Brown, 36 points’ . . .! We asked him to please repeat and talk slower, and when the answer still came out the same we asked for further information on this phenomenon of the hardwood ... MHC Cage Lions Close Season Mars Hill College’s Mountain Lions closed out their 1949 bas ketball season Saturday night, February 19, with a 66 to 58 con ference loss to the Brevard Tor nadoes. Brevard Brown, Lion for ward, threw in 18 points for a losing cause, he was ably aided by Bill Bennett and John Shaver with 10 points each. * ★ * ★ ★ •k'k'k-k-kirk-kirkifirk-kirirk'kir 14 Last year Brevard sizzled the hoop for a total of 323 points in 21 games, but has already beaten his own record with 328 points in only 18 games so far this season . . . And there are still two games to go . . . This stacks up as a total of 651 points for 39 games, or an average of 16.7 points per game. He is the regular short stop on Coach Red Ramsey’s Mountain Lions baseball team and is con sidered something more than a warm number on double plays . . . He batted in leadoff position for the Lions last season and ended up with a .353 swat average in junior college competition. Last spring Coach Edwards was in need of a man who could broad jump to round out his team of thinly clads—and Brevard came through . . . He jumped 21 feet, 7 inches to capture several first places in track competition. . . . At least once he did a double act that still has the boys talking . . . He was all hooked up in a base ball game and nearby the Lions were engaged in a Track meet . . . So, while his team was at bat, Brevard hopped over to the jump ing pit, jumped his usual 21 feet and then went back to take his cut at the baseball . . . . . . Brevard is no slough as a student ... He has a very high scholastic average, ha-ving made the Dean’s list each of the three semesters he has been enrolled at Mars Hill Junior College . . .
