tway, and Gene Roberts is pinchhit-
When Torrence was suddenly
called home on emergency and
iubtly insisted that I write this

as up enough on athletics to
;now how to purchase a ticket to
game if I was escorted to the
icket booth. I still maintain that
his is the unadulterated truth but
levertheless I was stuck with this
:olumn.
I’m just a big enough fan of
•he Lions to grin and bear it, even
-hough the team has dropped
three. This year’s version of the
Lions has done plenty to get me in
an uproar. Last year we can
grimly recall all the effort we
spent yelling for just one touch-
;down. The prospects for winning
3 game seldom flitted through the
vacuum of our cranium.

Huffman Dormitory, president of
the WAA council and a member
of the Business Club. Jessie Mae
is vice-president of the WAA
council and a past vice-president

Practice
Gets Underway
The 1951-52 basketball squad
of Mars Hill College has been
holding practice sessions for the
past two weeks.
Among the forty hopefuls re
porting for practice were veterans
Fred Ruby, a first-stringer from
last year’s squad, and Bob Reese
Ernie Brown, Jim Knighten and
Hal Buckner.
Head Coach Bob Edwards has
urged all boys interested in earn
ing a place on the team to come
out to practice sessions each aft
ernoon at 4:07 o’clock, as all po
sitions are wide open.
The College Lions dropped a
21-0 decision to Tenn. Wesleyan
in a non-conference battle on the
Mars Hill field Saturday night,
Oct. 27.
The Lions controlled the ball
for the greater part of the game,
but never had a single break come
their way and couldn’t get their
offenses to rolling in the right
spots.
They drove into Wesleyan ter
ritory five times during the game,
only to be held for downs with
the pay dirt stripe in sight.
Wesleyan scored early in the
game, the first time they had pos
sesion of the ball.
Two more Wesleyan touch
downs were scored in the second
quarter.
The Mars Hill netters defeated
the Lees-McRae netters 8-0 for
their second victory against no
defeats Friday, October 24.
In the singles matches, Potts
won 6-0, 6-0; Ward, 6-4, 6-0; Dan
iel, 6-1, 6-0; Ragan, 6-0, 6-2;
Storm, 6-1, 6-3; and Gregg, 6-1,
6-3.
The doubles team of Ward and
Daniel won their match 6-1, 6-1,
while Potts and Gregg teamed up
to win 6-2, 6-1.
Tonight at 7:35 the Mars Hill
Lions will meet a thrice defeated
North Greenville team. This will
mark the first time the two teams
have met on the gridiron.
The South Carolina Baptists
will field a heavy team. Little is
known about it except that it was
defeated twice by the Gardner-
Webb eleven and dropped a game
to the Lees-McRae eleven. Presby
terian Junior College has been the
only mutual opponent of the two
teams this season. The Lions lost
to Lees - McRae, 14-12, and
trounced P.J.C. 31-0.
When the Lions go on the field
tonight, they will in all proba
bility be minus the services of
Marion Powell, injured in the
Asheville - Biltmore game, and
Townes and Higby, injured in the
Tennessee Wesleyan game.
Both teams will employ the
“T” formation, and the Lions thus
far in the season have shown a
better defensive and offensive
play against “T” opponents.
Probable starters for Mars Hill
tonight will be Byrd and Reese
at end, Schubert and Garner at
tackle, Boatwright and Griffin at
guard, Medford at center, Connor
at quarterback, Singleton and
Boyd at halfback, and Buckner at
fullback.
