McGirts’ 18.3 Average Leads Lion Scoring Seven intramural basketball tilts were played during the week before exams as the intramural program swings into heavy action. Victories were scored by Euthal- ian, Philomathian, Veterans, Landers, Treat, Melrose, and Preachers. Leon Rooke tallied 8 points to lead the Eu’s to a 20-16 win over the Preachers to start the week’s activity. It was a low-scoring, but tight, contest all the way. In another close game Phi edged by Brotherhood 22-20. Charles Crook was high man for the Brotherhood crew with 7. Bill Butler led the losers with 12. Wright Stars Wayne Wright ripped 17 points through the basket as the Veterans stopped the Sams quin tet in another close one, 32-31. Sams led during the whole con test, but a final surge by the Vets provided the winning mar gin. Hugh Wilder was top man for the losers with 9. Landers won their second ball game of the year, defeating Brown 33-22. “Tab” Clevenger was once again top man on the totem pole for Landers with 10 digits. Another Tight Squeeze Treat broke into the win col umn with a nip-and-tuck triumph over Euthalia, 24-22. Harold Kirby tickled the cords for 9 points to once again lead the Treat offense. Hubert Bullard and Leon Rooke tallied 8 apiece for the Eu’s. Melrose continued their winning ways with a very impressive 51-19 slaughter over Phi. Poteat, Southern and Lee bucketed 12, 12, and 11 respec tively to lead Melrose to victory. Hammonds dumped 8 through the hoops for Phi. In the final contest of the week the Preachers subdued the Brotherhood, 35-13. Caldwell skimmed the mesh with 15 tallies for the Preachers while Charles Crook garnered 5 for Brother hood. MHC Scores 57-51 Victory Harris McGirt rocked the backboards for 26 points as he led the Lions of Mars Hill to a 57-51 triumph over Gardner Webb January 15 to close out the first semester schedule in a blaze of glory. Coming from behind after a slow start, the Mars Hill squad held a one-point lead with seconds left in the first half. Gardner Webb tallied a free throw to tie the tilt at the half. The Lions never had a comfortable lead, but were able to stay an occasional few points ahead of their oppon ents. After eight minutes of play in the second half the game was knotted at 36-36. A field goal by McGirt put the Lions in front and they remained there for the rest of the game. Not until the final minutes of play did the Lions move out front enough to be assured of a win. McGirt tallied his points on 9 field goals and 8 “Annie Oak ley’s.” Robinson and Brogdon had 9 digits for the Lions. Three games were on tap for this week, two of them among the family circle and one outside of it. In the first eight games, Mc Girt has scored 146 points to average 18.3 per contest. Mc- Girt’s running mate at forward, Bobby Robinson, has burned the nets for 119 points and a 14.9 average. Todd Kittrell and Bill Brogdon are neck and neck for third spot with totals of 88 and 76 points for respective averages of 11.0 and 9.5. McGirt has also taken the lead in rebounds with 82 for a 10.3 percentage. Kittrell has 51 and Robinson 42 to trail in that de partment. The field goal percentage is led by Kittrell with a 55.7 percent on his 34 out of 61 from the floor. Following his is McGirt with 51.9 on 56 out of 108, Brogdon with 48.4 on 30 out of 62, and Robinson with 38.6 on 54 out of 140 tries. Free Throw King In the free throw department Robinson leads with 64.7 percent on 11 out of 17, and Kittrell ranks second with 58.8 on 20 out of 34. He is followed by McGirt with 57.6 on 34 out of 59, and Brogdon with 45.7 on 16 out of 35. Others who have figured in the Lion scorings are Ray Hawkins with 31 total points, Charles Mc Call with 14, John Vance, 8, Mike Miller, 7, Harold Ponder, 7, Dave Leary, 6, Bobby Cole, 4, A1 Roach, 3. Pop Seal, no longer a member of the squad, has 6 points to his credit. The team’s average per game is 65.6 points compared to their opponents 63.9. The high for the Lions this season was 89 against Steed and the low was 38 in the Lees-McRae battle. The team per centage on field goals per scrap is 44.7 on 212 out of 474. The 51.4 per cent on free throws is unusually low for this end. The average rebounds taken is an ex cellent 33.3 for the eight games. Home Cage Season Ends With Spartans Spartanburg Junior College will provide the competition for the Mars Hill Lions Tuesday night at 7:30 o’clock on the McConnell court in what will be the final home game of the season for the Lions. They go on the road after that with seven straight games before the conference tournament is held. Spartanburg, which was beaten by Lees-McRae 71-66 weeks ago, is expected to start Bo Keeter and Jay Coker as forwards, Bill Scrog gins and Ray Coker in the guard slots, and Jim Jacks, one of their most dangerous men, at center.
