There are two returnees from last year’s team and several newcomers on the squad. Several matches are scheduled and the prospects are good for a winning team. Alem- bers of the team include John Reagan, Wayne Leathers, Bill Crump, Carl Conley, and Ward Hendon. Several other mean are out for the team, but their names are not available at . the time. Mars Hill Splits Two VS ith Tennis Team Spartanburg, 3-7,14-11, Defends Title Mars Hill’s hitters came alive in the second game of a double- header against Spartanburg Junior College, collecting 14 hits off four hurlers en route to a 14-11 triumph over the Pioneers in Spartanburg. SJC captured the opener of the twinbill, 7-3, be hind the four-hit pitching of right-hander Earl Crocker, who fanned 12 hitters. Dave Beck threw an eight-hitter for the Lions in a losing cause. Johnny Riddle, Morris Ma- MARS HILL son, and Ron Pare led the Lions lusty hitting attack in the second game. Mason had three doubles. Riddle had two dou bles and a single and Pare clout ed a homer and single. Home- runs were the order of the day for the Pioneers, as they took advantage of the short left-field fence. Lusauk and Turner connect ed for the circuit in the first game, while Wells, Turner, and Christopher homered for SJC in the second game. Ron Pare picked up the win for the Lions in the second game, and Crock er, who came on again in the nightcap, was the loser. The split of the twinbill left the Lions with a 5-2 record in the conference, as they embark on a road trip to Wingate and Cardner-Webb. dith^‘ Meets Milligan, Carson-Newman s hack team, under the leadership of Coach Harrell Hi’’®! two meets of the year to Milligan and Carson- 'lligan defeated the Lions 102-31, while Carson-New- , e Mars Hill thinclads 98-25. The only loss was to the Wingate Bulldogs. Victories have been reg istered against Gardner-Webb and Brevard. The team has four matches remaining and needs to win each of them in order to be a top contender for conference honors. As of now, freshman Leon Raper and sophomore Bobby Glover, a southpaw, look like the men to beat out for the top-seeded berths on the team. G-W BuDdogs Inflict First Loss On Lions Cardner-Webb’s Bulldogs in flicted the first defeat of the season upon the Lions’ baseball team, 4-3, on the Mars Hill dia mond. Righthander Ronnie Pare lost a heartbreaker, pitch ing a steady seven-hitter. He struck out seven and walked on ly two. The winning pitcher for Gardner-Webb was Mike Broach, who helped his own cause with three hits. Johnny Riddle collected a double and single for Mars Hill, while catcher Larry Lawson and certerfielder Morris Mason had two singles each. MH Rallies To Beat Wingate In 9th, 7-6 Coach Don Henderson’s Lions came from behind against Win gate to pull a thrilling 7-6 vic tory out of the fife, after trail ing by the score of 6-0. First sacker John Riddle doubled in the bottom of the ninth to drive across Morris Mason, who had walked, from first base. Riddle had two doubles and a single for his days work, which third baseman “Moe” Richardson smacked a double and two singles in four trips to the plate. Righthander Jimmy Tate came on in relief of Dave Beck in the second inning and held Wingate in check the rest of the way, picking up his second win of the campaign. Player MARS HILL Pos.
