Honor Clubs Plan Picnics For May Meets; Officers To Be Elected For Fall Semester Picnics, banquets, elections of new officers plus the regular pro grams compose the agenda for the May meetings of the Mars Hill Honor Clubs. The French Club will meet Tuesday night at Mrs. Nona Rob erts’ home for a program of skits to be conducted in French. Be fore the program, Mrs. Roberts will be hostess for the club at a dinner. Picnicking will be the major portion of the Science Club’s program. The picnic will be held during the week of May 7, and Humphrey Gardens will be the eating place. The English Honor Club, Scriblerus, will have dinner in the Blue Room at 5:30 Tues day, May 8. The theme of the program will be “In the Spring time”. Helen Brown, Ron Mc- Clamrock and Arliss Suttles will present a parody of “Romeo and Juliet”. Kay Shadoan will read an original short story and Lil lian Robinson will read poems on Spring. Nancy Stackhouse will be the hostess at her home for the Spanish Club picnic which will be held Friday night. May 12. At a recent called meeting of the Spanish Club, Larry Far rell was elected president; Jayne Tomlinson, vice-president; and Nancy Stackhouse, secretary- treasurer. The members of the Inter national Relations Club will hold their regular meeting at Carolina Hemlock near Burns ville on Tuesday afternoon. German Club members will meet at the home of Mr. Farkas for a picnic. Bruce Wins Contest Chapel Society Audrey Bruce was the winner of the Temperance Reading Con test which was held in chapel on May 1 between Nonpareil and Clio. The topic which Audrey used was “Is This the Answer?” Audrey was the runner-up of the Temperance Reading Contest held in Clio on February 23. Marsha Byassee, a Nonpareil, was runner-up. The title of her paper was “It’s Up to You.” Marsha won first place in the contest held earlier in Nonpareil. Starr Keller, the other Non pareil contestant, spoke on Alco holics Anonymous. Jean Yoder spoke on the importance of guid ance and influence by parents, and the attitude they have towards alcoholism. Jean was the other contestant representing Clio. Large Selection oi Crackers and Spreads VISIT THE 5&10 lor the latest Record Hits Mars Hill 5 & 10 Debate Team Travels To Carson-Newman On Thursday, April 20, mem bers of the Mars Hill College debating team and entrants in speaking contests journeyed to Jef ferson City, Tennessee, to partici pate in the Smoky Mountain Forensic Tournament at Carson- Newman College. One affirmative and one nega tive team represented Mars Hill in the debates on the intercollegi ate topic of the year, “Resolved: That the United States should adopt a program of compulsory health insurance for all citizens.” The affirmative team consisted of Harold Nesbitt and Paul Clark. Audrey Bunce and Johnny Grier composed the negative team. The Mars Hill College teams won a total of five debates, beating the University of Tennessee twice, Wingate College, East Tennessee College, and Carson-Newman Col lege. The winners of the six preliminary rounds advanced to the finals on the basis of skill dis played in presenting and uphold ing their case, refutation, delivery, and soundness of their arguments. MARS HILL — Mars Hill College professor Dr. Raymond Nelson will present a special pa per at the 4th annual Foreign Language Conference of the University of Kentucky in Lex ington on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Apr. 27-29). “Seneca Sine Cura” is the title of the study which Dr. Nel son, head of the ancient lan guage department and also an instructor in the Bible depart ment, will deliver at a meeting of classical language teachers Friday afternoon.
