Coach Jim Fish, who directs the year’s program, has worked out an entirely new plan for operating the intramural pro gram and encourages all boys to participate. Aim of the program is to pro vide wholesome, competitive rec reational activities for the male half of the student body. A handsome trophy, to be awarded to the team having the best record for the year, should add interest to the competition. Teams will be grouped in eight divisions, representing the different residences for men and the societies. Brown, Melrose, Spilman, Myers, Philomathia and Euthalia will constitute separate divisions. Teams from private homes, Sams Building, Woodrow Cottage and Mrs. Vann’s will constitute a division called “Upper Cottages.” An other division, called “Lower Cottages” will be composed of teams from Cody Apartments, Cooper, Wood, Bowden, Lan ders and Humphrey houses. Volley ball and basketball are also scheduled for the fall, leaving competition in table tennis, liadminton, softball, track and horseshoes on the spring schedule. A point system will be in operation for each sport, and the final intramural winner will be the division having the high est total points. The name of the winning division will be en graved on the trophy, which will be displayed in a promi nent public place. Other intramural activities being planned include a field day in which the freshmen will compete against the sopho mores: a tumbling club, weight lifting club, hiking and camp- outs. Lions Fight To 0-0 Draw Although outweighed almost 15 pounds per man, the Mars Hill Lions scrapped a powerful Ferrum (Va.) team to a 0-0 draw here last Saturday night. For the most part the game was played between the 30-yard stripes, but the Lions did drive to the Panthers’ 13-yard line at one point early in the fourth quarter. A pass interception killed the march at that point. Ferrum M.H. N. C. Trip To Banner Elk Marks 1st Game, WCJCC Season With high hopes for a good season despite a 0-0 draw in last week’s opener, the Mars Hill College Lions journey to Banner Elk this afternoon for a conference battle with the Lees-McRae Bobcats. Game time is 2 p.m. Both teams are members of the Western Carolinas Junior College Conference, which also includes Asheville-Biltmore, Brevard, Gard- ner-Webb and Wingate in North Carolina and North Greenville and Spartanburg in South Carolina. Of the eight only Mars Hill, Lees-McRae, Gardner-Webb and Wingate play intercollegiate football. This makes it necessary for each to play the other three WINGATE NEXT Wingate’s Bulldogs will pro vide the opposition for Mars Hill’s second home game next Saturday night (Sept. 30) be ginning at 8 o’clock. The remainder of the Lions’ 1961 schedule is as follows: Oct. 7, Gardner-Webb here Oct. 14, Lees-McRae here Oct. 21, at Wingate Oct. 28, Marion (Ala.) Insti tute here Nov. 4, at Gardner-Webb WRA Groups Plan Activities On Monday, September 11, the Women’s Recreation Associ ation held a party in the gym to introduce the freshman girls to the W. R. A. and the Officer’s Council. Each club chairman staged a skit to arouse interest in her club. Nearly six hundred students attended the pep rally sponsored by the W. R. A. on Friday, Sep tember 15. The College Band was present as well as Coaches Henderson and Wood, who urg ed support of the football team and expressed the value of sports manship. This morning at 7:45 the W. R. A. held a pep rally as the team departed for the game with Lees-McRae. Volleyball practice rounds were held Monday night, Sep tember 15, with Huffman Dorm competing against Edna Moore Dorm and Stroup Dorm versus Treat Dorm. To enter tourna ment play, a girl must partici pate in two-thirds of the practice games, which will be played at 5:00 and 6:00 each Monday eve ning. The Hiking Club, which meets at 5:00 P.M. every Friday, gave a cookout at the Cascades last night. The Physical Culture Club, under the leadership of Barbara Pate and Betty Jane Foster, meets every Friday night to discuss various topics of inter est to girls. Other clubs to start soon are the Tennis Club and the Tum bling Club. The Crafts Club also will begin activity soon with Helen Brown in charge. New club chairmen and their clubs are Suzie Merrimon, Tennis Club: Cookie Alexander, Tum bling Club: Sara Griffin, Hiking Club: Judy Pierce, Volleyball Club: and Linda Warric, Arch ery Club. twice per season. Little is known of this year’s Bobcat squad, but last year’s team captured the league cham pionship, beating the Lions twice in the process, 21-0 and 15- 0. Gone from the Lees-McRae campus this year, however, is Terry Postell, a mighty mite who was named on the 1960 junior college all-American team. Oddly enough, this season the Postell name stands out on the Mars Hill roster. It is that of Buddy Postell, a 5-10, 150-pound speedster from Robbinsville, who saw plenty of action last week against Ferrum both as an offen sive and defensive half-back. A shoulder injury may hamper Postell’s play against Lees-Mc Rae, Coach Henderson said ear lier this week. The Lion offense, which was bottled up by the big Ferrum line, received serious attention of the coaches during practice this week including the installa tion of a whole new series of plays. The passing game and punting were stressed in practice each day. With one game under their belts the players should be ready to settle down to a steadier per formance against the Bobcats. Coach Henderson said he ex pects more boys to be in shape by game time today and will sub stitute more freely as a result. Vono Freeman, a 5-7, 155- pound halfback who was out for practice before the opening game but dro’pped out, returned to the corps of halfbacks this week. Henderson said he feels the former North Buncombe High School star is one of the fastest men on the team and will add punch to the offensive unit. Co-Captain Larry Honeycutt, who may not have been as effec tive as possible against Ferrum because of a mouth injury sus tained in practice last week, should be hale and hearty again, ready to add his 190 pounds to the scoring attack. While the Lions and the Bob cats are battling in the first con ference tilt of the season the other two teams in the league will be playing non-conference opponents. The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs will be entertaining the Furman freshman team and Wingate’s Bulldogs will be host to the Chowan Braves, another Baptist junior college team from the eastern end of the state. A bus load of Mars Hill fans will make the trip to Banner Elk today, thanks to the planning of Miss Virginia Hart, who arrang ed for the bus. Departure will be at noon sharp, she emphasiz ed.
