The most important evont at Mars Hill College in this century has passed into history—the in auguration of Dr. Fred Blake Bentley as president of the col lege. It is perhaps the most im portant event of this century be cause, more than at any other time, an era has ended and a new one has begun. Dr. Bentley em phasized this in his inaugural ad dress. Dr. Bentley said, “The only justification for our existence is excellence or the promise of at taining it. Unless the church-re lated college can discharge a dis tinctive function, it can scarcely expect to draw upon the churches’ resources or upon the people’s confidence.” He went on to say, “The endeavor of the church-re lated college is not monasticism or legalism, but it is the union of Christian and academic concern. What the college can require of the students is an intelligent un derstanding of the Christian faith and life.” He noted that in a re cent publication, EMPHASIS ON EXCELLENCE, “we have stated that Mars Hill College will en deavor to have an institutional environment in which teaching i our main function and the stii dent is our greatest concern . . an emphasis on the individual!’! In closing his address. Dr. Bent] ley stated some distinctives in which the school’s integrity i vested, pledging his best perform ance to the trustees, to the facul ty, and to the students. To thi students, he said, “The utility o the process of learning, over an( above the pleasure it may give is that it should serve you in th( future. Learning should not onlj take us somewhere as an enc achieved; it should allow us t( continue to grow more easily John Dewey stated this more pre cisely when he said, ‘Education is all one with growing.’ Learn ing is a continuing process of re construction of experience. May each of us in this community realize our poor condition and seek to grow together.” He ended with a simple, all- encompassing pledge to each and every person connected with Mars Hill College. “I have no ambitions, no interests, no desires except to do with all my heart, mind, and soul what my office requires.” Georg quarterba *ides. F Duncan. We ART CRITIQUE On exihibt in the Fine Arts Gallery until 3 Dec., 1966, is a col lection of drawings and paintings by Tucker Cooke, instructor of Art at Asheville-Biltmore College. The artist’s debt to the great French tradition of the nineteenth century is evidenced by the two drawings after Jean Auguste Ingres- In these, Cooke’s academic background and ability are clearly demon strated. His fine draughtsmanship can be seen as well in the paint ings: “The Black Coat, Virginia,” and “Red Rose Repose, Linda.” I® both, skillfully drawn, sensitively rendered figures of young girls dominate. Contrasting with these lyrical works are the more abstract “O’re the Ramparts We Watched,” and the brutal, expressionistic “The Legal Age.” Equally as brutal is the satirical “America, America,” in which a pompous, vacant face glares from behind “shades” while an American flag unfurls in pink and white glory. Competent, versatile, the paintings and drawings in the current exhibition at Mars Hill represent a conservative approach to the exciting and meaningful forms and techniques of modern art. —Robert Haycraft The hopes : here E game mare lina’s liams, leader ence, c out-cla; Pulll two t( Period caught halanc time tl Afte Wester Perfon monies Burgin Queen and Bi crowne Queen, her wl ditiona In tl Wester tack, scored the lor WHEN YOU CARE TO SEND THE VERY BEST SEND HALLMARK ing Hill THANKSGIVING i GREETING CARDS if, THE STUDENT CENTER J.
