The campus now sustains two active student political clubs fol lowing last week’s formation of a Young Democrats Club. Accord ing to Allen Lane, a senior his tory major from Charlotte, who heads the newly established gp"oup, the club will be a year-round ac tivity. Danny Ray, sophomore from Waynesville, is serving as vice president. Joan Leich, senior from Durham, has accepted the responsibilities o f secretary. Cathey Serota, senior from Ashe ville, heads the club’s program of strategy; Tommy Vann, senior from Murfreesboro, is handling publicity; and Marlene Freck, junior from Asheville, is in charge of membership. Immediate plans for the campus YDC include the maintaining of the club’s headquarters in the gym area of the McConnell Build ing, beginning a four-day regis tration of students into the vari ous parties; a confrontation next week with supporters of the Re publican and American Independ ent Party candidates, plus a mock election for students, which will be held in the Student Center Thursday, Oct. 31. The YDC officials hope to en gage YRC and American Inde pendent Party supporters in a de bate. Such an event would, ac cording to Ray, “give the clubs an excellent chance to express their views on the issues involved in the 1968 elections.” The recently organized Young Republicans Club hosted the grand opening and official dedi cation of Republican headquarters in downtown Mars Hill last week. The headquarters, complete with campaign literature and telephone service, is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The club also sponsored a car caravan to the Asheville Airport on Oct. 16 to greet the daughters of presidential candidate Richard Nixon, who were accompanied by the grandson of former President Dwight Eisenhower. The trio of well-known young people were in Asheville to assist in the dedica tion of the Republican headquar ters there. The campus YRC’s latest proj ect is a telephone canvass of the Mars Hill area to see if all eli gible voters are registered. The club plans to provide transpbrta- tion to the polls for those local citizens who might otherwise be unable to take advantage of their voting privilege. SGA Activity Varies Widely Headed by Bill Pons, the Cafe teria Committee of the Student Government Association is work ing with Louis Moelchert, college business manager, on improve ments in the grade of meat served, use of leftover food, and better preparation of food.
