The program for the summer will last from June 9 through August 22 and will place 2o students in state agencies. An internship involves both a ^0-hour work week and a concen trated seminar series. At the same time as they are deepening their knowledge of the state, interns "fill have a challenging opportim- *ty to be of immediate and real "alue to the state agencies in "fhich they work. The first week is an orientation ■ Period which begins the interns’ tamiliarization with almost every Aspect of North Carolina — his- f°ry, economics, government, pol itics, and geography. For the next lO Weeks interns will work as full- time employees assigned to var ious state agencies and will par ticipate in discussions of North t-arolina’s administration pro grams in seminars held two nights ® Week. Five (5) students will be selected to reside in target areas. Working with persons chos en at the local level, they will strive to accomplish common goals and objectives to improve the community in which they re side. Specific attention and emphasis will be given to problems and needs identified by local personnel and existing community organiza tions. Emphases may include a broad spectrum of needs involv ing local economics, recreation and educational opportunities, and tutorial assistance. Two categories of major concern will be recrea tion and education. There wiU be opportunities for participation by both youth and adults in cultural activities. A secondary purpose of the project will be to integrate activities with existing agencies, community programs, and oppor tunities available in the County. A grant of $9,000 was received this year to assist Mars Hill Col lege in becoming more closely re lated to the surrounding commun ities. The Leadership Training Program is an integral part of the Mars HiU College Community De velopment Institute, which seeks to relate the academic program to off-campus service learning ex periences. The Training staff works close ly with the local Community Ac tion Agency (OEO) and other gov ernmental agencies in identifying action research projects and in ternship pHDsitions for Mars HiU College students, in training anti poverty personnel and local of ficials, and in studying local con ditions in an effort to determine the best types of programs and approaches the service agencies should follow. Furthermore, it seeks new ways in which students and faculty members of the col lege can become more deeply in volved in the development of Ap palachian communities. vide contacts and assistance with in the target areas. The Council will also assist in selecting com munity volunteers for the pro gram, aUowing the democratic process to function in the com munity organizations. The program will include five college students and fifteen local volunteers from selected commun ities. It will last ten weeks, begin ning June 2 and ending August 10, 1969. A successful program will assure continued work for the fifteen community VISTAs for a full calendar year. This will pro vide many more meaningful ex periences for all persons involved. Specific tasks of the program include organizing a recreational program, establishing a tutorial program, participating in com munity affairs, concentrating on current events and problems in the community and seeking edu cational and cultural opportunities for residents.
