A MHC Alumnus has recently been appoint ed as the Executive Editor of the Phila- delphia Inquirer. Mr. Gene Roberts, class of 1952, came to the In- quirer from the New York Times where he Served as National News Editor. While '^ith the Times, Mr. Roberts commanded 60 fulltime reporters throughout the United States. Mr. Roberts has a '^ell established and Impressive list of ac- complishments in jour- ’^'alism. The radio station was not funded by the college for the '72 - '73 school year. In support of WMHC's request. Dean Gehring (a member of the board) made a mo tion that the pro posal be "strong ly” endorsed by the board and pre sented to the president. Geh ring was impressed by the managing and operational procedures of the station and felt that they had im proved considerab ly over previous years. Hillto/i Editor Resigns Applications Being Accepted By Sam Easterby Gene Roberts kley Carmichael and John Lewis. He also has been chief war correspondent in Viet nam where he covered the battle of Hue dur ing the TET offensive of 1968. The Golds boro, North Carolina, native has also writ ten several books and magazine articles. Mr. Roberts re ceived the citation as Mars Hill "Alumnus of the Year" in 1970. While at Mars Hill he was Sports Editor and Editor-in-chief of the HILLTOP. Mr. Roberts was on campus February 22, 1972 as one in a series of symposium lecture speakers. Sam Easterby an nounced his plans to resign as the editor of the HILLTOP at the end of the fall semes ter. He explained to the Board for Student Communication Media that an opprotunity has arisen to do his torical research for the Park Service in the Great Smoky Moun tain National Park 3 Added To Who’s Who Three MHC stu dents who should have been included in the Who's Who story in the Oct. 20 issue were in advertently omit ted. These three are Rebecca Sams- college marshall,, Kay Sherrill-past senator, and Jan Sparks-senior sen ator. The HILLTOP staff congratu lates these stu dents for their inclusion in Who's Who. during the spring se mester. Easterby and George Richardson'(al so in the project)have received funds from the Appalachian Regio nal Commission to sup port their project. The Board announ ced that applications for the position of editor will be accep ted until the end of the fall semester and that the editor for the spring will be chosen by the board during the mini-term in January. The applications are available in the office of Walter Smith (chairman of the board), located in the Montague building. Any student may apply for the job. After lengthy discussion on each of, the issues, both were approved by the board. Also brought to the attention of the board was the idea of a "Christ ian" publication on- campus to be offically sponsor ed by the Minist- rial Conference.
