The game was close throughout, as both teams played on even terms. The battle of the boards was relatively even, Guilford edging Mars Hill 39-31. The Lions were down by 1 point with 3 minutes letf to play, had posession of the ball, but could not quite grasp the reins of victory, losing 85- 80 in a hard-fought battle. Mike Miller led the attack with 37 points, and Jerry Hayes added 14. Lloyd Free was high scorer for the Quakers with 27 points. The Lions traveled to High Point, N. C. February 22, for another Carolina’s Conference tussle, this time with the Pan thers of High Point College. The Lions showed the effects of the week long off and played sluggish basketball, not quite good enough for victory, losing 83-74. Mike Miller and Joe Bridges, scoring 18 and 14 points respectively, for Mars Hill. Collins led the High Point attack with 22 points. The Cagers played their last home game of the current cam paign against South Carolina State on February 24. The senior Lions, Mike Miller, Joe Kruk, John Adeimy, and Jim Epting were honored before the game, and this quartet started the game along with Joe Bridges. Despite some inspired individual per formances, such as 22 points by Joe Bridges and 16 by Joe Kruk, the Lions could not quite put it all together, losing their third game in a row. This was the final District 6 NAIA game of the sea son for Mars Hill, closing out with a 6-5 record. The basketball team showed the effects of the long road trip to Wilson, N. C., handing Atlan tic Christian College their fifth win of the season. The game was marked by poor play on both sides, but Atlantic Christian played good enough to post a victory, winning by the margin of 75-66. Leading scorer for Mars _HiI^_^2^as^_£oeBridgds^with33 points, and Bowden paced At lantic Christian with 21 points. The Carolina’s Conference returned to the YMCA in Lexing ton, N. C. after an absence of five years. In first round play Pfeiffer was beaten by Lenoir Rhyne, Mars Hill was beaten by Catawba, Guilford beat Atiantic Christian, Elon beat High Point, with Catawba the eventual winner of the Carolina’s Confer ence Tournament. Mars Hill was hampered by poor play throughout the game against Catawba, losing their fifth in a row, 61-49. Mike Miller with 15 points and Joe Bridges with Lynn for 13 paced the Lion attack with 20 was high scorer Catawba. In post-season honors, Joe Bridges was named to both Dis trict 6 and Carolina’s Conference honor squads, in his first year of basketball at Mars Hill College after transfering from Sand Hills Community College. Joe also led the regular season scor ing for Mars Hill College with a 17.2 points per game average. Jerry Hayes with 13.3 ppg and Mike Miller with 13.1 helped the Lions cause. Joe also led rebounding with an 11.7 average per game.
