Baseball Team Stumbles by David McConnell The baseball team opened the season March 24 with a doub leheader against Cat awba. The Lions lost the first game 10-2, with Jeff Cudd as the losing pitcher. Greg Clewis had a double and Harold Brookshire a single to account for the only Mars Hill hits. They came back in the second game to win 4-3, Brandon Dean went the distance, allowing but 7 hits. Greg Swinehart with two singles was the lead ing stick. On March 26, the Lions dropped a doubleheader to At lantic Christian, losing 4-3 and 6-4. Harold Brookshire had a sacrifice in the first game to account for 2 Mars Hill runs. David Smith had 2 singles in the second game. The Lions tra veled to Newberry College April 14 for a doubleheader, their opener in District 6. The lions were plag ued by poor play throughout, losing 5-1 dnd 11-0. The players are becoming adjusted to the new system introduced by Coach Claude "Hoot" Gibson and his assis tants, Bill Mitchell and Mike Prior. The enthusiasm' of the squad is high and chances of a winning season in 1973 are great. The women's tennis squad of Mars Hill lost their opening match, April 11 to Appalachian State, 7-2. The Mars Hill Col lege tennis squad, under the tutelage of Coach Harrell Wood, opened their season on March 8, defeating Milligan by a score of 9-0. On March 9, they traveled to Ers- kine College and were defeated 9-0. March 14, the Lions lost at Wofford, 5-4. On March 20, the squad evened their record at the expense of U.N.C.-A., 5-4. On. March 23, the netters. traveled to Lenoir Rhyne College for match #5, losing 5-4. At Gardner Webb on March 27, the Lions won 5-4. Mars Hill lost to Warren Wilson March 28 for the first time in 10 years by the score of 6-3. On Friday, Ap ril 13, the Lions de feated Milligan by a score of 7-2. Their record as of this time stands at 4-4. Spring intramural® have begun with soft' ball for both men women. Men's compel' ition began in th® rain on April 16. Spring basketball practice began Apt^l 17, with 16 men porting to Coach Lytton. The sq«3> is looking better, there is depth at tf’® forward and cent®^ positions, somethi^^ that was lacking 1972.
