Saturday, Mav 5, 1973 MARS HILL COLLEGE HILLTOP Page Two Saturday, by Frank Farrell It's springtime and the smells of buding trees and flowers fill the air. Also, firecrackers, frisbee's and water balloons fill the air. Now I'm sure that some will call throw ing water balloons and having water fight's Irresponsible behavior. I agree that throwing water at someone who is completely uninvolved in the activity is being .unthoughtful and can be extremely annoying. However, before we can label this type behavior irresponsibility I feel we must try to analyze these events. It occurs to me that activities such as water balloon fights are an infre quent occurance on many other campuses. Now I realize that my experience with other schools may be limited but I feel it is sufficient grounds for ray remarks. I do not feel that the make-up of the student body at Mars Hill is that much different than at other Institutions. This leads me to sur mise that the envi ronment of the in stitution breeds this type behavior. I am a follower of the theory that if a person is given no responsibility and not treated as a re sponsible person then he will act irrespon sibly. I feel this is the case at Mars Hill. Now I realize that there are some tremendous opportuni ties for students to become involved in responsible roles on campus. However, the feelings of responsi bility that these se lect students enjoy do not permeate the entire student body. In other words, the student body as a whole feels it is be ing treated as if it were irresponsible. Since the majority of students do feel this way they have no need to act responsi bly. They feel they have nothing to gain by acting in what is deemed a responsible manner. I feel this is exemplified in the attitudes toward SGA. Many students view this organization as ineffective and thus don't support it. I propose that the reasons students have this type attitude are the social rules and regulations of the college. Many view these rules as treating them as ir responsible children and thus their behav ior reflects this at titude . I do feel that there are other rea sons for water fights and such behavior. I be lieve that during this week the college has laureled Itself out for at least un til next May. And speaking of Laurels, the illustrious year book was placed in the mealy hands of students last week amid exultation and disappointment. I will not comment on the yearbook for in the process I would make some people hap py and some people sad. I will merely say that for the time limit that the editor had to work in it was a miracle that we had the book at all. While on the sub ject of books I want to take this time to mention Under the Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas is playing in Owen on Saturday. There are 15 actors to play over 60 parts in this story of Llarregub a Welsh town of interesting and vivid characters. My buddy, David Hobbs, is playing a part which I tried out for. So when you see him doing Willy Nilly, the postman, please don't hiss or boo. I have no hard feelings. By the way you don't have to ap plaud either- Applause or acco lades I don't know which is more deserv ing to Ken Chamlee for his latest honor. Ken, who is editor of the Cadenza for the coming year has just recieved notice that he was selected by the judges of the Kansas City Poetry Contest as one of the finalists in this year's contest. One of the judges for this year's contest was John Updike. Ken's poem, can be seen in the present issue of the Cadenza. Presently, Dr. Bentley has been dis cussing with the HILLTOP the last is sue and its impor tance. Confidential ly I think "he doth protest too much." This weeks awards are typically inte resting to note. The outstanding student award goes to Danny Miller for his cred its in the past Hon ors Day Program. The HILLTOP STATEMENT EXPLAINED by Frank Farrell tr “Can't Yoo (^raping f/nals? In the April 20th issue of the HILLTOP "Philosophical Pro fundities of Dammit dealt with the extent and use of Dr. Bent ley's power. The author stated that Dr. Bentley had used his power to prohibit faculty members from becoming Involved in a recent drug arrest involving Mars Hill students. At a spec ial called meeting of the Board of Student Communications Media Dr. Bentley said that he in no manner or way requested or pro hibited faculty to "keep hands off" in the matter. It was agreed during the communications board meeting that if the HILLTOP could not produce evidence to justify "Philosophi cal Profundities of Dammit's" allegations then it would rectify the situation. After lengthy con versation with the source of the article we were unable to produce material to No Doz Award goes to Mary Dierchs who without her I would not have had enough time to finish this column. The Surprise Award goes to Step' hanle Johnson, who when called on as the recipient of the Dra ma Award during Hon ors Day was in bed fast asleep. There is only one week of school left before exams and I afl sure it is noticeabl® that I have not men tioned Phil Weast un til now. Now, what was the reason fot this? Simple. It has been five weeks since I brought his name up in this col' innn and he has not made any attempt to reply or deny my ac cusations . The only point that can b® made from this soli tude is that Mr Weast knows that I aff right. Also, the administration does n't seem to be wor ried that Phillip not doing his job- Why should they be worried it's not their money that they are spending^ Think about that for awhil® Dr. Don. Oh, by the way, Phil, what was the proposition that the cheerleaders turned you down o** concerning thelt dance last week? It is time to co®® to an abrupt end. So , I'll end with thl® thought.
