LIONS RECEIVE
BOWL BID
To the delight of all the foot
ball-mad students and adminis
trators at Mars Hill, the Lions
this week received an invitation
to attend their first bowl game in
the school’s illustrious football
history. The site for the Lions
initial bowl appearance will be
Jacksonville, Florida, home of
the prestigious Gator Bowl.
Television coverage will be sup
plied by ABC and a capacity -
crowd of 70,000 is expected to
view the spectacle.
When reached for comment
about the Gator Bowl invitation,
the coaching staff was charac
teristically exuberant and loqua
cious. Expanding upon the impact
of the invitation on the future of
athletics at Mars Hill, one coach
remarked, “Naturally we’re all
thrilled to accept this invitaion.
We all felt deserving of this trip
to Jacksonville. This invitation
should put an end once and for all
to that jabbering about football
being overemphasized and a drain
on the school’s academic reserves.
Why, we only spent slightly more
than a tenth of a millin dollars
of the school’s money for football,
2nd look where we ended up!
If these narrow minded school
officials would only allot us more
funds, there’s no limit to what we
could accomplish. A few more
telephones for the coaches and
® few more pairs of white shoes
could carry us all the way to the
Cotton Bowl!”
Contributing to the conversa
tion, a second coach added, “I’d
like to just beat the hell out of
Some of those academic radicals
tvho think Mars Hill is some
kind of intellectual playground
lor spoiled kids who expect
scholarships just to read books
and write papers. All this bull
about athletes taking crip courses
and wasting potential money for
other departments should be
shoved right down their throats.
So what if we have to drop a
couple of departments because
of football? First things gotta
come first. Hell, I love America
and I love football, and if those
stupid weirdos really were Ameri
cans, they’d love football too!!”
Thus, it seems as if the hundreds
of thousands of dollars that Mars
Hill has thrown into the bottom
less football pit has finally paid
dividends. I, for one, feel that a
hardy round of congratulations to
the football team and their coach
es is in order. Congratulations!
Incidently, for all those wishing
to see the Lions in the Gator Bowl,
they will be sitting in Section
H, rows 55 and 56.

Lions take
over No. 1
in CC
The pre-season prediction for
the C. C. read Elon No. 1. Last
Tuesday night, the Lions changed
a lot of minds by defeating Elon
by a 58-50 score. The cagers
had already defeated Claflin
College 68-62 in Orangeburg; and
taken third place in the Turkey
Classic at Elon, losing 58-50 to
Belmont Abbey and beating High
Point 63-60.
The Lions played a good first
half against Elon, going into the
dressing room with a 10 point
lead. Being the sports that they
are, the lions came out and promp
tly gave up the lead. The pressure
was on — and the lions showed
Elon and their supposed superman
Diffy Ross how to handle pres
sure. Ross had been reading Joe
Bridges shoe sizes while his shots
were being rejected. In the clos
ing moments and with Elon in a
position to win, Ross turned down
two wideopen lay-ups.
The lions played good team ball,
showing a lot of power in the start
ing five and reserves. Ben Wil
liams and Seth Metcalf giving
impressive performances.
Since Elon, the Lions have
defeated powerful Newberry
83-79, U.N.C.-A. 90-77 (the
largest margin ever over U.N.C.-
A.), and lost to Erskine 75-70
taking second place in the Lander
Invitational. They now stand at
5-2, a very respectable record
against strong competition.
Lions Roar Past Claflin
Joe Bridges pumped 28 points
and 15 rebounds to pace the
Lions in last Tuesday nights
victory over Claflin College 85-67.
This did not appear to be the same
contest that went on at Claflin
in our first game of the season

IS
where we edged the Panthers
only 68-62. This was the 2nd
in a row of Lion victories at home
in as many games.
Jimmy Graves, Jerry Hayes,
and Kenny Ward all got in double
figures in scoring. It first ap
peared that the Lions would blow
Claflin off the court but the
Panthers gave a fine second half
scoring effort against the Lions
second team, to leave them only
18 down at the final gun.
I feel that this was a most
significant victory for the Lions
as they prepare for the Cosmic
Tournament this Thursday and
Friday, Dec. 13 and 14 at
UNC-Asheville Gymnasium. The
Lions, now first place in the
Carolinas Conference after knock
ing off Elon last week, can now
build a reputation that will make
all teams fear to enter the Lion’s
Den.

BRIDGES AGAIN . . . leads scoring and rebounds against Elon
Co-ed eager — Ready to Rally

Aside from good looks, our
Lady Lions possess the ability
to make this season a really good
one for women’s basketball at
MHC. With the quality coaching
of Dr. Hollingsworth, better known
as “Coach”, the ’73-N squad has
truly developed into a strong unit.
Says Coach Hollingsworth,
“We look promisingly to a good
season. We have six girls return
ing and they will probably be the
backbone of the team. Our new
girls are really coming through
and that counts just as much.”
The team has practiced hard
for the past three weeks. Coach
Hollingsworth said that the girls
looked real good for this time of
the season.
The Co-ed Cagers open their
season on January 18 against
Wake Forest and January 19
against Elon. Both games will
be played in Cullowhee. These
Lady Lions need our Support too.
So back the Lady Lions — back
the BEST!
