Is there something wrong at Mars Hill College? I have cho sen to run for Presi dent of the S.G.A . along with my running mate, Mike Gardner, because for the past year we have witness ed a growing apathy and mistrust among the student body as to the effectiveness and worth of S.G.A. on this campus. This apathy has contribut ed to empty seats at concerts, i movies, games, and all areas of social activity. Is there something wrong? i beleive there is a failure of effective leadership, and it can and must but period rela- istration, during this of improved tions, what attention has been given to the needs and desires of students? Students are seen but are they heard by the current S.G.A.? The blunt truth is that there has been a total breakdown in communi cation between the S.G.A. and the major ity of students. Where was the S.G.A. when you needed them? I think students have had enough of this type of leadership. It is time for the S.G.A. to acheive its true goal, that is to serve as the voice of the students, ra ther than a mouth piece for Admin istration. Only when the S.G.A. earns the trust of the student body will the leader ship of the campus start to become ef fective in dealing CONSIDER... According to an Official List of Endanger ed Species, there are 31 species of fishes 8 species of reptiles and amphibians, 17 species of mammals, and 54 species of bird which stand the possibility of extinction. Included in this list is the Eastern tim ber wolf, Columbian white-tailed deer, the American alligator, and the whooping crane. In a summary published by the National Wildlife Federation, it is seated,"We are robbing our U.S. wildlife of living space as well as polluting their environment." For example, more than 150,000 birds die annually in the oil field sumps alone. In a recent study of one oil sump there were 187 victims — 90 songbirds, 87 ducks one owl, one egret, five geese, and three herons. with the problems which exist at Mars Hill. JIM M^Reynolds A suggestion box could decide what is to happen within that yedr. That could bring about new ideas that may have never my I This is first year at MHC. am currently a junior maj oring in Biology and Psychology. My reasons for running are very straight forward. I feel students do not have an active part in the S. G. A. By this, I mean it seems as though one can not make his voice heard on various issues. I feel the present administratioii has geared Itself more for the future and has left the present student body hanging. Whoever is in office should consider the rights of those stu dents here and now and concentrate on the future in what spare time is left. 'My platform is a simple one. I plan to have an open ad ministration and should like to get more students invol ved in student gove rnment affairs. It is your government and I feel that stu dents should be made aware of any issue which arises, espec ially with the gas shortage here to stay it seems. It is my opinion that the students' rights concerning the area of financial spending of student activities should be observed closer and a monthly report Issued on how it was spent. Next week is National Wildlife Week. Listen to Mike Lennartz, for your own good. CAROLYN'S SEW& SO MOVED NEXT DOOR SPRING FABRIC for EASTER & JR-SR FORMALS occurred otherwise. Students' rights should be observered politically and soc ially. I expect to make progress. I feel a few minor changes should be made immed iately especially.in the area of traffic control. I do not feel the students' best Interest was at heart when it was al lowed to charge the student $8.00 for a parking ticket. Pub - lication of future issues and proposals could be put in the Hilltop before each meeting so the stu dents could find out what is happening and reserve time to come and hear as well as express their views on these bills. Let's face it, without you (the student body) ^there would not be any reason for a S. G. A. Make your - self heard. Vote. LARRY PIKE WE SEW FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY main street 689 3103 The office of Stu dent Government Asso ciation President is unusually demanding. It requires an indi vidual who is not on ly self confident and enthusiastic, but one who is highly quali fied and experienced. Since coming to Mars Hill, I have dedicated myself to the improvement of this college. I have always felt that no good will be accom plished by complain ing; progress is ach ieved only through hard work.
