ORIENTATION by Connie Montague On Friday, August 23, 1974, Freshman Orienatation begsui. As in orientations of the past few years, all freshmen met. There were approxi mately 450 freshmen in all. They went through the regular placement tests, how to register and so on» but one of the things that was different was the intruduction to the competency based curriculum. This was the largest endeavor ever taken at Mars Hill for an orientation because this is the first time that all of the faculty has ever met. The purpose for their meeting was to explain the compe tency based curric ulum since each department varies in its requirements. Although *Dr. Gehring saw flaws in the program, he said that the parents who attended orientation thought it was a good one. His final remark to this year's orientation was "A best beginning is always the hardest." He sees hope for this type of orientation as the years go on. To help things out this year, mentor groups were set up. Each group included: a faculty mentor, a student mentor and some 15 to 20 fresh men. These teams of mentors explained in detail the new curric ulum, among other personal development goals. Without the mentor groups, little would have been accomplished at the orientation. OKEY f When someone spends thirty years reminding people to be careful with fire, and he does it for no other reason than to save our forests, he makes a lot of friends. Even if he’s just a bear.
