PAGE TWELVE MARS HILL COLLEGE HILLTOP FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13,1974 k CHESTER & DURHAM STAR IN LION VICTORY by Eric Garner "Chester, I"m gonna take your scholarship away if you make a mistake like that a- gain", was the shout of Lion Head Football Coach Claude "Hoot" Gibson last season as he yelled at, then freshmen, Jerry Chester. Jerry is a 5*11" , 215 pound sophomore P.E. major who caitle to Mars Hill in 1973 wanting to play football. Jerry asked the coaches if he could try out and before long, he was in a starting role (after he quit making so many mistakes). Jerry started the last 7 games of the '73 season and is up in the front devensive tackle position this year. The Jacksonville, Florida native was an outstanding lineman at Paxson High School where he was named to All-City, All-County, and All-Regional teams. Jerry has started his own tradition at Mars Hill. In last Saturdays' victory for the Lions over Emory and Henry, Chester was a part of the defensive front line that allowed the Emory offense to gain only six yards rushing. Jerry had eight unassisted tackles and three assists plus one fumble recovery and was a key player involved in tackling the Emory punter in the end zone to score a safety. Jerry was voted by the coaches as Defensive Player of the Week. The coaches also selected junior running back Jerome Durham as the Offensive Player of the Week. Jerome is an art major from Warner Robins, Georgia. Jerome exploded last Saturday night for 101 yards in 19 carries. Jerome was used mostly for blocking back last season but offensive backfield coach Alex Robbins emphasized the need for unity among the backs both in blocking and running. It appeared that both backs Durham and. Ronnie Reeves are running and blocking well for each other. The real test comes this Saturday, when M.H.C. hosts Elon for the conference championship at 7:30. LIONS o%'SiR Jerry Chester (above) and Jerome Durham (photo not available) were chosen players of the week In 19-6 win over Emory and Henry. By Jeff Cudd A spirited crowd packed Meares Stadium last Saturday night to see the Mars Hill "Lion Machlng" crunch the Emory and Henry Wasps 19-6. Veteran defensive back, David Boschelli, got things rolling with a 1st quarter interception of an Emory arial. The offense, behind a 10 yd. pass from Quarterback Danny Robinson to Ronnie Capps, and a 16 yd. jaunt by Jerome Durham moved the ac tion to the Emory and Henry 4 yd. line. Ronnie Reeves took over from here and swept left end for a touchdown. Stan Curry's P.A.T. was* perfect and the Lions were on the way to victory. A partially deflec ted Emory and Henry punt proved to be a deadly mistake, as the Lions added 3 more quick points on a 22 yd. field goal by Stan Curry, and thus led 10-0 midway through the 1st quarter. On Emory's next possession, the Lion defense, led by Greg Hasselbring, Jerry Chester, Jeff Stapleton, Dave Roberts, and Stan Curry showed little mercy. Emory had figured out by now that it just wasn't their night and tried a futile quick-kick. Jerry Chester, Lion tackle, would have nothing of it and slapped the ball into the end zone for a safety and two more points for a 12-0 Lion lead at half time. The Lions came out of the dressing room ready for action and quickly moved the ball to the Emory 13 yd. line, with the running of Jerome Durham and Ronnie Reeves. Danny Robinson put on an CHEERLEADBtS by Sarah Traylor MARS Hill - Debbie Miller, Jimmy Hicks, Trisha Newlen, Judy Echols, Sam Swaim, Janet Lee, Jimmy Johnson, Susan Stafford, Dean Martin, Terry Smith, "Koffee" Buckson, Gwen Graham, and "Fish" Hutchinson are perhaps just names of people to you. However, the above thirteen comprise Mars Hill College's most spirited group of people...the cheer leaders . The cheerleaders recently returned from cheerleading camp which proved to be a learning exper ience for them. Camp was held at East Tennessee State Uni versity and was spon sored by the National Cheerleaders Associa tion (NCA). There were 35 schools re presented, some of which were: The Uni versity * of Florida, Middle Tennessee Uni versity, the Univer sity of Alabama, Tennessee Tech., Carson - Newman, act of his own as he found 6 pts. at the end of a 13 yd. scramble up the mid dle. Curry drilled the uprights once more making the score 19-0. The 4th quarter was a fine display of Lion defense, and Rocky Cater showed Lion fans he knows how to catch a foot ball. Saturday.'' hat goes off to Jerry Chester, who led the Lion defense with 8 tackles, and to Jerome Durham who rushed for 101 yards on 19 carries. Keep up the good work Lions!I! WIN Lenoir Rhyne, Elon, the University of Louisiana, and Jackson University in Texas. During this 4 day period the schedule remained mainly the same. Each day con sisted of morning classes which taught three cheers per day, mini-tramp, tumbling, double stunts and for girls pom-pom rou tines. In the after noon each school met with a staffer from the NCA who worked with them for about a half hour. Each school then practised on its own, what they had learned. They met with a staffer and three other squads. At this time competition was held between the squads. The competition was based on a game-type situation which in cluded chants, skits, pep gimmicks, a cheer from home and a cheer learned while at camp. There could be' no repetition. Each day awards were given to the in dividual squads. The awards were assigned AWARDS the following ordei beginning with the highest award; supe rior , excellent an^ outstanding.
