PAGE SIX MAJ^ HILL COLLEGE HILLTOP FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1974 FRIDAY, PEOPLE by Dick Newsome Back by popular de mand, Saturday night in McConnell "Coli seum," the College Union presents the Doobie Brothers Right?? Would you believe Marshall Tucker? No. How a- bout PEOPLE:I PEOPLE, a band from Augusta, Georgia will return to MHC. Having played here last spring, this is OFF AND COMPE TING Let me tell you of a fine facility available to you: the student, faculty, or staff member. Wren College Union was newly opened last year, and has many new and exciting areas of entertain ment. Available are: a recreation room, a coffeehouse, a snack bar, a lounge area, couple of television rooms and much more. In order to find its full worth, this writer suggests you beat a path to the Union and check it out for yourself. I would like to single out the Recreation Room and tell you a little bit about it. On any given afternoon, you can play pool, either pocket or bumper, ping-pong, and foos- ball. If you don't believe the compe tition is keen, you just try rackin' 'em up with Dr. Quick, or grab a paddle with Leo Nara. You'll agree with me, there is a rough game in the offing. This year the Recreation Committee has met and set up nine (9) tournaments for your enjojnnent and competition. A chess tourney is set for Monday, September 16th and the winner will be sent to the Regional Tournaments, all expenses paid, cour tesy of Wren College Union. All I can say is "I wish I played chess." Also being played for represen tation in the Regionals are; Bridge and 14.1 pool. I don't play bridge as well as J. Boy Black, but he'd better be alert—I ^ play pooll Other tournaments in Ping-Pong, Foos- ball. Spades, Eight- ball, Bridge and Chess will be played for school champion ships. If you win a tournament in this area, your name goes on a wall plaque in the Union. The dates for those tournaments will be posted all over the place, but if you still miss them, no sweat—pound on down to the Rec Room and ask the attendant on duty, he has a complete list of the tournaments. Deadline to register for all tournaments is one week before the day of the tour nament. These tour naments are open to students, facultyi and staff members. If you are won dering what to do with your spare time, amble on around to Wren College Union, lay a quarter on the attendant for regis tration (that's not bad), and get into a tournament. As J. Boy says '"I can't hate it, I just can't hate it." your chance to hear them again or for the first time. The dance will be held after the Elon game. It will begin at 10:00 PM and con tinue until 2:00 AM. It is understood that none of the girls will turn into pump kins until 2:00, at least 1:30 anyhow. Admission will be the standard $1.00 for couples and $.75 for singles. III! fS,-- mm . "PEOPLE" to play at DANCE THE GOOD, THE BAD 'AND THE AWFUL by Bob Kramer A new year is ahead of us and with every new year comes a new season of movies. This season will be particularly good for any of you disaster nuts. Just look at some of the new re leases: Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, Airport 1975, Earth quake, The Towering Inferno, The Theatre) (PG) Lee Marvin as a crusty old bank robber who educates three yo\ing- sters for a brief career in crime. Long on mood; short on ac tion. Super Cops (Mars Theatre) (R) A minor league Serpico. Bat man and Robin versus crime and corruption. Does not live up to its name. Hitler, The Last 10 but not of Hitler r The viewer is unable to see Hitler's ' pow er. It is not the fault of Guiness who certainly resembles Hitler; perhaps the power cannot be por trayed. Either you have it or you don't. The Awful... Separate Peace Hindenburg, and what will have to be the "creme de la creme". The Day the World Ended. Days (Moore Auditor ium) (PG) Alec Guiness as Hitler. Good portrayal of background characters (Moore Audi tor ivim) (PG) Juvenile rituals of courage at a classy easter prep, school. Jumping from a tree into a river. I recommend Svinday night football in stead. Now for the next two weeks in film in Mars Hill: The Good... Magnum Force (Mars Theatre) (R) Clint Eastwood in the return of Dirty Harry. Not as believable as Dirty Harry. Police vigilantes? Didn't they see Serpico? West World (Mars Let us Serve YOUR Auto Needs Theatre) (PG) Disney world for adults Great for science fiction lovers. Weak on acting, but strong on action. Billy Jack (Mars Theatre) (PG) Rere leased in time to promote the new film. The Trial Of Billy - Oil Auto Parts Auto Repairs Jack. Bad guys, rat- tlesnaikes, Indians, karate, corruption; just your average American film. I pre fer Kane in Kung Fu. The Bad... Spikes Gang (Mars OPEN 7:30 - 6:00 M-S 12:00-6:00 Sun.
