Do you know why that strange sounding ani mal is? Could you explain it to someone else? It not, read further and maybe you'll learn more about that which you've trapped your- *self into. One way of attempt- int to understand the new curriculum is to compare it to the former curriculum Under the previous curriculum, students graduated from Mars Hill College by com pleting the courses required by the core curriculiam, or de partmental majors. Under the new curri culum, only the Men tor Seminar is re quired as a specific course. All other requirements are stated in terms of competences to be de monstrated and the student chooses learning experiences he or she needs from suggested courses of fered by the college. Under the compe tence-based curricu lum, students will still take courses, engage in independent study, participate in interships and enjoy educational travel as they now do. The difference is that these learning exper iences will be se lected according to the learning needs of individual students as they seek to at tain college compe tences . This curri culum will bring to gether the many di verse learning exper iences offered by the sollege into a con- •"sistent whole so that a student's education will be less frag mented. In addition, where students al ready have knowledge and skills relevant to the college com petence requirements, thye would receive certification of the possession of such competences and build upon them rather than duplicate previously gained competence. The six general competences to re re quired of students at. Mars Hill derive from six broad areas of meaning in which man kind has sought to arrange his exper ience and achieve better understanding. These areas are basic symbolic communica tion, science, aesth etics, personal and cultural value, per sonal knowledge and synoptic knowledge. Students will be led to explore and devel- ope competences in approaching them selves and their world from each of these six basic frameworks. The com petences go beyond requiring knowledge about these six realms of meaning to specify experience in developing skills in each realm. The competences, as presently devel oped, are as follows: 1) A graduate of Mars Hill College is com petent in communica tion skills. 2) A graduate of Mars Hill can uas knowledge by: Dick Newsome As of early last Tuesday afternoon, Fanny, an ali-female, band was going to give Mars Hill College one of the best shows ever. Was going to,Right? Right,. A strange thing hap pened on the way to fame and glory here at M.H.C. Phil Weast informed the College Union Board Tuesday after noon that Fanny had canceled the concert that had been sche duled for September 28. The reasons for this are connected to their recording of a new album and {>ro- blems with their man agement . The College Union wanted to emphasize that there has not been a loss of any money and that this is not a repeat of the "Badfinger Af fair." It seems that this is the case and fault, if any, lies beyond the College Union and the school. What now? It is. likely that another group will be chosen from the same price range# The purchase would be from the a- gency that was invol ved with the booking of Fanny, this being the Johnny Hensley and Mears Agency. The concert commit tee is working to see what they can come up with. Hopefully we can count on the com mittee using judge ment by not rushing into anything and by taking into consider ation students' opin ions . gained in self-as sessment to further his own personal de velopment. 3) A graduate of Mars Hill College compre hends the major val ues of his own cul ture, the major val ues of one alterna tive culture, and can analyze relationships between the major values of at least two cultures. 4) A graduate of Mars Hill College under stands the nature of aesthetic perception and is aware of the significance of creative and aesthe tic dimensions of his own experience, 5) A graduate of Mars Hill understands the basic elements of the scientific method of inquiry and applies this understanding by acquiring, identify ing and analyzing in formation which leads to scientific conclu sions. 6) A graduate of Mars Hill College has ex amined several at tempts to achieve a unified world view and knows how such attempts are made. The graduate is aware of the broad ques tions that have been posed in the history, philosophy and reli gion of the western civilization and can asses the validity of answers given to these broad questions in terms of internal consistency, compara tive analyses own position. and his 7) A graduate of Mars Hille College is com petent in an area of specialization. Statement of the competences with the overall development of its students as persons and not just walking encyclopedias, We are presently trying to make the competence statements as acciirate and spe cific as possible while still retaining and emphasis on flexi bility to respond to the needs of individ ual students. The major outlines of the curriculum have been formulated and facul ty are beginning work on they design of learning experiences to assist students in attaining the compe tences. If we have done our work well, Mars Hill College should have a curri- culvim which clearly states what we mean by a liberal arts ed ucation, comm\inicateS to the students pre cisely what is ex pected of them for a bachelor's degree and enables the colleg® to become more ac countable by deter mining both wat it does for the students and how well it .doeS it. These goals cer tainly are worthy any quality colleg® in today's world. BEST LAID PLANS...
