VOL XLIX NUMBER 4
MARS HILL, NORTH CAROLINA
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1974
C 0 NTROV R R S lAL A UTHOR
TO SPEAK AT MARS HILL
mars HILL-Erich von
l*aniken, 38 year old
Swiss native who has
created a whirlwind
controvery with,
^is books on ancient
astronauts, will pre-
®®nt a lecture at
Mars Hill College
"^lesday, October 15,
8 p.m. in the
School's Moore Audi
torium.
Von Daniken's books
Chariots of the
Gods from Outer
^fiaee, and Gold of
Gods—deal with
the theory that the
oarth was visited in
^''cient times by as
tronauts from outer
space. Von Daniken
teels that they plan
ted the seeds of civ-
^^^2ation as we know
i^t today, and left
^tunning evidence"
their presence.
Published in the
^te i960' s in Europe^
^nd the early 1970's
the United States,
, ® three voliames
^Ve been translated
Into 32 foreign lan
guages — even Chi
nese — and have sold
28 million copies.
An NBC television
film, "In Search of
Ancient Astronauts,"
received one of the
highest ranked view
ings of the year when
it was aired last
winter.
To support his
statements, von
Daniken has research
ed ancient; material
including the books
of Tibetan monks,
stone relics of the
Mayas and Incas, the
pyramids of Egypt,
the sculpture of
Easter Island, cave
drawings in North
Africa, unusual mark
ings in Japan, Italy,
Australia, and scores
of phenomena in other
parts of the world.
The Biblical pro
phet EzeMiel has pro
ven to be one of the
most fascinating sour
ces for von Daniken.
The author contends
that the fiery cha
riots Ezekiel wrote
about were the space
ships of ancient as
tronauts .
Reinterpreting the
information he has
gathered from these
sources in the light
of modern technologi
cal advances,
von Daniken uses
these findings to sup
port his theories.
Because he has depar
ted from traditional
methods of archeolo
gical research,
von Daniken has be
come the target of
attack from the tra
ditional scientific
community. He has,
however, drawn sup
port from members of
the scientific com
munity such as NASA
engineer Joesf F.
Blumrich, Dr. Karl
Kuhlemberg of Aachen
University, and
Dr. Herman Oberth,
the father of the
modern-day rocket.
Von Daniken's lec
ture is well illustra
ted with slides from
his travels to the
various sites he has
researched. The lec
ture is open to the
general public, and
there is no admission
charge.
