The issue debated at this meeting was:"Re solved: That the power of the Presidency should be significant ly curtailed." In the course of the debate, there are two teams representing .either the affirmative or the negative position. The ^irmative speaks first with an alloted time of ten minutes then the negative is given the same oppor tunity. The process is then repeated with a be staying in a re treat center owned and operated by the sponsoring church. First they will un dergo three days of orientation to inner city life under the direction of exper ienced mission per sonal from various churches which serve in the Baltimore ghetto. After the orienta tion they will work in seven major areas of social ministry: a day care center, a soup kitchen, a well- baby clinic,a coffee house for youth, a coffeehouse for the elderly, a thrift shop, and a half-way house. The second stage is rebutal. The negative side speaks for 5 minutes attempt ing to refute the af firmative case. The affirmative is allot ed another* 5 minutes in order to make his stand clearly under stood. The process is again repeated and this segment is com pleted. The judge , (chosen from a differ ent school other than the schools being re presented) decides the debate on the basis of organization, con tent , presentation and bout their experienc es in the mission project. Several members of the group comprise a folk team which has been invit ed to participate in a special citywide crusade in Fredrick, Md., Jan. 17-19. The entire group will take off one Saturday for a tour of the nation's cap ital . Joining the stu dents for part of the time will be Richard Sale, new director of the college counsel ing center. Most of the stu dents participating in the project will receive mini - mester credit through the Religion Department. The project is be ing planned and di rected by a steering committee headed by Darryl Elster. Others tinually been among the college magazines to recieve grants from the council. During the debate the team must alternate between the affirma tive and the negative After the six rounds 8 out of 21 teams are chosen for the quarr ter finals and then the winner is :-chosen from the 8. In their first show ing , the MHC debate team exhibited a lot of preparation consid ering the very short time with which they had to prepare. Under the circumstances states Steve Boyce, on the committee in clude Valorie McNabb, Judy Bates, Glenna Sturgill, Sheila Speight, and Richard Sale. In addition to these, other students who plan to partici pate in the mini-teion project include; Pat Burchett,Henry Tingle Paul Haywood, Adele West, Danny Georges, Dennis Daniel, Lori Smart, Rick Parris, Sherry McGuire, Terry Vaughan, Mark Dickerson, David Brisson, Cindy Hill, Dee Smith, Suzanne "We made a fine show ing for Mars Hill Col.- lege. We gained a lot of experience and we now know what to expect. I feel the team will do 100% better at the next tournament." Accord ing to Scott Sivils , "As far as my lack of experience as a de bater,! feel I learjned a lot in a few short minutes."Ben Franklin says that , "there is plenty of room on the team for more members. College Chap lin, Robert Melvin, is advisor to the mini-mester class. The pastor of the Seventh Baptist Church praised the efforts of last year’*s stu dent group as "an unqualified success.'.' In a letter to Mr. Melvin he cited the Mars Killians as "the best student group we have ever had. WllllEL PAGEMII Many exciting add itions ahve been made to the Miss Laurel Pageant this year. The Pageant, to be held this year on C&n- 30, 1975 at 8:15 pm., in Moore Auditorium, will again be spon sored by the Sinfon- ians of Phi Mu Alpha' Music Fraternity. John Psychas and Charles Conner who are co-directors of this years pageant, have been working hard to see that this pageant will be the best ever. There will be a slate of five judges to select Miss Laurel 1975 and they are; Mr.Richard A.Wood,Jr. Mayor of Ashevillp, Ms. Claire Burggrun Music Inst.Asheville, Dr. J.K.
