The handbell choir is
under the direction
of the Rev. James V.

Moravian Church. Rev.
Salzwedel is a grad
uate of Concordia
College, the Moravian
Seminary, and holds
a master's degree in
music from the Uni
versity of Kentucky.
Under his direction
the Hussite Bell
Ringers have been
considered one of the
best teams in the
United States. Rev.
Salzwedel will lead a
workshop during the
festival on handbell
choirs.
Also worth noting
will be a readers'

design of posters,
announcements, and
program covers.
Dr. Austin C.
Lovelace, minister of
music at Lover's Lane
United Methodist
Church in Dallas,
will be a workshop
leader in the use of
music in the church.
Dr. Lovelace is an
acknowledged author
ity on subjects re
lating to music and
worship, and he has
published numerous
articles in profes
sional journals as
well as four books,
including the well-
known Music and Wor
ship in the Church.
He has held positions
at several institu
tions of higher learn
ing , including the
University of Nebras
ka, Garrett Theologi
cal Seminary, and
Union Theological
Seminary, and has
served churches in
several states. Dr.
Lovelace currently
has 250 musical com
positions for church
music in print.
The festival was
organized by the
college's music de
partment as an effort
to call attention to
the proper use of the
arts in a church pro
gram and to make
known the resources
the college has under
its new church music
degree. Under the
new competency-based
curriculum at the
school, a degree in
church music was
authorized last sim
mer by the trustees
of the college to
better prepare grad
uates who plan a vo
cation in the combin
ed fields of church
work and music.
For additional in
formation and regis
tration forms, inter
ested persons should
contact William
Thomas, Church Music
Coordinator, Depart
ment of Music, Mars
Hill College, Mars
Hill, N.C. 28754.

They organized them
