PAGE TWO MARS HILL COLLEGE HILLTOP FRIDAY,.FEBRUARY 6, 1976 “Stone’s Soliloquy” becoming aware How many times has the word "bicentenni al" been seen or heard in the last 6 months and how many more times will we encoianter it in the 1976 vear?As historic as this year is, be fore it is over, "bi centennial" will have been run into the ground. During this Bicen tennial and election year, people need to be aware of what it means to be an Ameri can in the latter twentieth century. Maybe all of us need to rearrange our pri orities? Americans take too many things for granted like high ways, water, electri city, food, etc.,etc. True, we never rea lize what we have un til it is gone or we know it is not depen dable or permanent. People in the United States are very for tunate; they have ac cess to many commodi ties and luxuries. Over one third of the world's population does not have access to sufficient food and clothing; least of all luxiories. In this issue, there are several articles that have restored some of my faith in North Americans. Se veral organizations on campus have under taken humanitarian projects. More groups and organizations ev erywhere need to be come involved, or at least become aware of, those people who have less than the majori ty of us. We need to become aware ,of different conditions under which other people live. Our "way" is not necessarily the "right" way of life. The quality of our lives and our atti tude toward ourselves and others is more valuable than materi al possessions. Become aware and try to make this Bi centennial Year a better year'.
