PAGE TIO MARS HILL COLLEGE HILLTOP ^^Stone’s Soliloquy” Different-Not Inferior Dr. Gratis Williams, chancellor of Appal achian State Univer sity, started the Ap- plachian Artists Ser ies with a lecture and personal comments on "Teaching in Ap palachia." He very strongly believes that the Appalachian sub - culture is a challenge to teachers who should be a mem ber of that sub-cul ture of have an un derstanding and posi tive attitude toward it. Whether its teach ing or just getting along with people, we all need to look at other cultures and sub - cultures more positively. Just be cause other people are different does not mean they are in ferior 'J Dr. Williams read an article where the United States is com pared to a fruitcake. This is an inter esting analogy that contradicts the "mel ting pot" euphemism. The United States is more like a fruitcake than a melting pot; each ingredient re tains its peculiar characteristics while enhancing the total flavor. Educators are be ginning to take steps toward cultural plur alism'. Bilingual/bi- cultural Curricula are being developed in many communities. This awareness of the needs of children who are cultura-ly dif ferent is one way of attacking a long-ne glected problem. Members of a subcul ture often have a low self-concept of them selves and their cul ture because they are taught to equate the Anglo - American cul ture with virtue, goodness, and even political purity. Anglo values conflict with many of the-sub culture's values. The children's self- concept grows more negative the longer they remain in school. They belong to two worlds and yet to neither because to be educated they have to reject their own cul ture and conform. We need to begin under standing other cul tures and subcultures around us. Insight into their nature re quires us to accept them and their values. What right do we have to judge cultures di versity as "right" or "wrong"? Students, Have you ever stopped to think what this college was like 13 years ago? The freshmen women could only date one after noon each week, no phone calls could be made after 6 p.m., permission from the dean was needed to move your car from its assigned packing place, everyone had to be in bed with 11:00. . . The list goes on. It was 13 years ago that the Student Gov ernment Association was founded, yet many students believe that the ^SGA has done no thing. Those that do have not stopped to think. I am not saying that life is perfect at Mars Hill; that is far from the case. Progress has been ' 'Continued on p. 6 rioN 1. !id to: The Vic The Vic of riON 2, riON 4. D. The and pet Id to: riON 5.
