The name of the new unit: Kennelwagen. by Regina Joseph Mary Jo Byrd,a gra duate intern from the University of South Carolina, is comple ting her master's study this semester at Mars Hill College. Some of tier respon sibilities include being on the counse ling center staff, leading a. mentor group. Slid completing two independent study programs. Mars Hill College, according to Mary Jo, has many opportuni ties for the inquisi tive student. Ske feels Mentor Groups, if taken full advan tage of, c luld be in valuable e>5>eriences. The purpose of these groups is to provide a basis for th.e stu dent's personal deve lopment. This learning experience should on ly be the beginning of a process for a better and more ful filling life. In Ms. Byrd's opinion, the mentor group can help the insecure students discover in whick fields they are most interested. Several ways this could be accomplished are through, a concentra ted course or through on-the-job training Previously, she has had several jobs that have aided in her ca reer choice of coun seling. One of these, being a cashier in a grocery store, allowed her to learn to ac cept all kinds of people; she could look at their situa tion more objectively and be a better coun selor and friend. Mary Jo,a Georgian, attended Gardner Webb College before going to USC. She thinks, that her time at Mars Hill is fulfilling al though she would like to become more in volved in one-to-one counseling for which she is available on Tuesday nights in the Edna Moore apartment or during the day in the counseling center Credit With Pay.^ Since January 14, Mars Hill College stu dents have been get ting credit for "wor king" off campus in public service agen cies.
