Romeconing Representatives Chosen
The results of the Romeoom'tng Court eleottons were an-
nounoed Monday^ October 1. The representatives from the
freshman class are Idren Hoffman and Jamie Odom; from the
sophomore class are Melanie Rail and Derrick Johnson; and
from the junior class are Robin I^nsink and David Atkinson.
The representatives from the senior class^ Idy

Lion Fever is an event which will happen only once in your lifetime. That is the
exciting theme that will be used to celebrate our Homecoming Weekend, October
5-6. The festivities start Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in Meares Football Stadium where a
rehearsal for “Lion Growl” will take place. But don’t let that name scare you. It
is a spirit-filled pep rally where skits are presented by various clubs or groups of
students. The groups will perform Friday night at 8:00 in the stadium and the best
actors will receive a cash prize for their organization. Our Homecoming Weekend
will also be enhanced by the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Festival. This celebration will
begin Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Owen Theater with a demonstration of fiddling styles
entitled “Hornpipes to Hoedowns.” Admission is $1.00 for adults and 50C for chil
dren.
Saturday is the biggest day of the celebration and fun activities are planned for
everyone on campus. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. there will be a home
coming coffee for faculty, staff, alumni, and guests in the Peterson Conference
Room. At 9:00 a.m. the First Annual Mars Hill Run for Fun will begin at the athletic
field; it will eventually wind through the Mars Hill Community. A $3.50 entrance
fee will be charged to all participants and in return they will receive a T-shirt. At
9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. craft demonstration consisting of quilt making, apple but
ter making, and much more will be held on the Oval in front of Blackwell Building.
Morning Music Workshops will take place at 10:15 a.m. led by such artists as
Lou Therrell, Gary Spence, Craig Dubose, Lynn & Liz Shaw, David Holt, and Quay
Smathers. These fine musicians will be teaching aspects of the oldtime banjo, Ap
palachian dulcimer, oldtime fiddle, beginning guitar, and Christian Harmony Music,
Oldtime Christian Harmony Singing will be led later at 11:15 a.m. by Quay Smathers
in McConnell Building Gym.
After attending all these activities, you surely will be ready for a “Sizzle on the
Slab” around 11:00 a.m. You should bring your own steak but baked potatoes, sour
cream, butter, and drinks will be provided.
The afternoon festivities will then resume at 1:00 p.m. when the Homecoming
Parade participants will be assembling in Gibson parking lot to begin their p^ces-
sional at 1:30 p.m. At 2:00 p.m. there will be oldtime ballad singing by Madison Coun
ty singers in the Appalachian Room of Memorial Library. The pre-game activities
start at 2:10 p.m. with the announcement of the parade, recognition of the senior
football players, and honoring of the football queen. Mars Hill will compete against
Guilford College in the 2:30 game and a half-time show will feature the representa
tives of each class from which a new homecoming king and queen was selected.
Distinguished alumni will also be honored at this time. Following the game, at 5:15
p m an Alumni Chicken Dinner will be held in Chambers Gymnasium at the cost ot
$4.00 per person and then at 7:00 p.m. there will be mountain music and dancing
to wind up the day in Moore Auditorium. Forty music groups mil be performing
and clogging along with Mars Hill College’s own Bailey Mountain Cloggers.
Lion Fever has been anticipated for a long time and it represents a week end
that you won’t be able to forget soon. Be sure and don’t miss it! /[nita Teller
