Sportsline with Andy
Remember on Saturday, March 22, is the annual Spring football game. It is an
inter-squad scrimmage and will place the blue team against the white. Come out
Saturday and see Mars Hill's own Steve Campbell, Mark Clark, Cliff Searcy and
others.
Coach Jack Lytton wanted me to thank all those who gave the prayer and sang
the national anthem before all the home basketball games this season. He never
got the chance to thank you and now he wants you to know that he really appreciat
es it. "This group was second to none!”
Now it’s my turn. At the last home basketball game for the Lady Lions this sea
son, there was a small group of students that got together to act as “cheerleaders”
for the Lady Lions. This group included Jim Fisher, Gina King, Joey Orr, Sandy Ver
non, Cliff Bowen, Kristina Smith and Leslie Talbert. They did a terrific job and
they really do not know how much the women on the team appreciated it. Thanks,
and maybe someday the cheerleaders will get that much spirit!
The weather is shaping up, so instead of trying to get a tan behind Huffman or
up on men's hill, you can get a tan watching some spring sport in action. When there
is a home game, try to get out to see it.
The Mars Hill women’s tennis team is starting off right after a successful fall
season. Last week, they defeated USC-Lancaster 9-0. Keep up the good work la
dies.

Women’s Softball
Last year, under the direction of Dr.
Hollingsworth and Miss Webster, the
women’s softball team finished a disap
pointing 4-12. This year hopefully
should prove different. Mr. Tom Wood,
recreation teacher here at Mars Hill, will
guide this young and inexperienced team
which fields only four returning players.
These four are Kim Beck, Candy Porter,
Lou Lathem, and Kelly Bullard. The
rest include Faye Thomas, Janice McDar-
is, Diane Bartlett, Denise Deaton, Jose
phine Clark, Sonja McGee, Geri Peter
son, Peekie Godwin, Beverly Bruce and
Angie Johnson.
David Atkinson, a physical education
major, is the assistant coach under Tom
Wood this season. "David will be a very
valuable asset to the team and has good
knowledge of the game of softball,”
said Wood.
This season slates 24 games for the
Lady Lions and includes three tourna
ments (Roundrobin Tournament in
Greensboro, the Catawba Tournament in
Catawba, and the NCAIAW Tourna-
mentj. The big day for Mars Hill will be
March 22 as they play four teams in
Division two. Mars Hill’s own division.
One critical part of the season will be
the following week as the Lady Lions
play nine games, all on the road.
Defense should be the strongest part
of the team, especially the infield.
This is a very exciting team this year.
"There is a nucleus to have a good team
and a good season this year,” stated
Coach Wood. "The difference between
a good and average team is that a good
team can make the cut-off plays in soft-
ball.”
This group looks to have the potential
to do very well this year. This weekend
will prove their ability as softball gets
underway here at Mars Hill.
