Sams Stubbs Scholarship Continued from page 1 Sams has developed the methods course for “The Teaching of Mathema tics” for students seeking secondary cer tification; he has developed the geometry course, “Foundations of Geometry;” he contributed in a significant way to the cui> riculum when Mars Hill became a senior college; he wrote the course competencies for “Mathematics for Elementary Educa tion;” and he has been the college super visor for every secondary mathematics student teacher at Mars Hill College. He is active in the community and has served on numerous boards and com mittees of the Mars Hill Baptist Church. This past year he was nominated for and was a finalist in the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics competition which recognizes outstanding teachers. During the coming year, Sams will serve as a consultant to share with the college’s faculty his unique ability to put students, both regular and the adult learner, at ease and to communicate effectively as well as share his counseling techniques. Established in 1956 by Robert L. Stubbs (Class of ‘65) and Drs. Earl J. and Patsy Stubbs Fry (Blass of ‘52), this $200 award is made in honor of Mr. & Mrs. P. P. Stubbs of Shelby in recognition of their support of Christian higher eduea- tion. The award is made on the basis of need and scholarship. The 1980 recipi ent is JoAnne Sanderson, a junior from Kinston. Tomberlin And Hensley Scholarship Mr. & Mrs. Gay Hensley of Greensboro established this award in 1964 in honor of Mr. Hensley’s parents. The proceeds are used to assist a worthy student from Yancey or Madison Counties. The 1980- 81 recipient is Patricia D. Buckner, a soph omore from Mars Hill. Sorority Named Top Greeks The Inter-Greek Council has selected Omega Kappa Alpha sorority for the 1980 Outstanding Greek Organization Award. This award is made by the student affairs council using the criteria of service, involvement, and contributions to campus life for their selection. Alpha Chi Top Scholars The Mars Hill chapter of the Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship I Society, Epsilon Chapter, includes students from the top five per cent of the junior and senior class who have maintained an academic average of at least 3.5. Toygar Virginia Caroline Wiggins Ren Everett Wiles Rilla Marie Williamson Three Promoted Three of the college’s faculty members, representing three academic dis ciplines, have been promoted this year. The three are William Hutt, named Associate Professor of Biology from assistant professor; Kenneth M. Sancha- grin, promoted to Associate Professor of Sociology from assistant professor; and Carolyn R. Thompson, also named Associate Professor from Instructor of Social Work. Dr. Hutt has been a member of the college’s faculty since 1974. He holds an undergraduate degree from Calvin College and earned his master’s and Ph.D. fi-om the University of Georgia. Dr. Sanchagrin came to Mars Hill in 1971 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Sacred Heart Seminary. He also holds both master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Wayne State University. Mrs. Tliomp- son became a member of the school’s faculty in 1976. Preceptors are defined as teachers, and these students serve in two centers as instructors for students having difficulty in writing or in mathematics. Mrs. Kay Gregory, instructor of English, and Mrs. Susan Kiser, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, serve as their respective spon sors. These positions are honor placements and do carry financial renumera tion.
