.Page Six, THE HILLTOP, November 13, 1981. Lions “Bear”ly Win 7-6 By Bobby Hayes RONNIE OWENS GRINDS OUT MORE YARDAGE AGAINST PRESBYTERIAN Photo by Tom McCombs C> 1981 Final Football Statistics ^ Individual Scoring Player Kickoff Returns Mars Hill fullback Wilbur Allen scored from two yards out with 1:59 remaining in the game to give the Lions a hard-fought 7-6 win over the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears Nov ember 1, at Mars Hill. Instrumental in the victory was a stingy Lion defense, which held the Bears to a mere 145 yards total offense on the afternoon. The Mars Hill offense nearly doubled the Bears in total offense, but four costly turnovers halted any momentum the Lions tried to gain. Mars Hill’s troubles began in the first period when they turned the ball over twice inside the Bears’ 10. After the Lion defense came up with a fumble recovery of their own on the Bears 24 in their initial series of downs. Mars Hill drove down to the 5 before quarterback Tim Gearrin fumbled as he was trying to pass on a third and five situation. Later in the opening stanza following a short Lenoir-Rhyne punt, the Lions drove 62 yards to the Bear 2, but on third and goal Mars Hill tailback William Mitchell was hit hard near the goal-line and fumbled into the endzone where Bear noseguard Ernie Bumgarner alertly fell on the ball with 3;41 left in the opening frame. Both teams threatened mildly in the second quarter, but both came away empty. Lion kicker Glenn Fritz was short on a 44 yard field-goal attempt while the Bears tried a desperation 58 yard effort that fell way short, so the half ended with a scoreless deadlock. The second half continued to be an exercise in frustration for the Lions on the first play as quarterback Tim Gearrin fumbled for the second time and the Bears recovered on the Lion 20. A costly pass interference call on third and goal from the 4 kept the Bear drive alive, and with 12:58 left in third stanza L-R halfback Phillip Morris dived over from the one for a 6-0 Bear lead. Bear kicker Jeff Long’s PAT sailed wide left however and this turned out to be a crucial miss in the final minutes. Matters looked grim for the Lions until a heads-up play by Skeet Chappelle put them in business. With 4:31 left to play. Bear punter John Pruett shanked a punt of 8 yards and Chappelle alertly fielded the ball and sprinted 15 yards down the sidelines to the Bear 25. Five plays later, Wilbur Allen scored up the middle on third and goal, and when senior placekicker Mike Davidson split the uprights with hisPAT kick, the Lions’ frustration was over. Mars Hill moved to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the SAC-8, while Lenoir-Rhyne dropped to 1-7, 1-3.
