J*age Two, THE HILLTOP, December 4,1981- Editorial by Andy Behl Well, this is my first official editorial. Wow!! They finally made me the official editor — let’s see how long I keep it. It is really hard to think up editorials for this paper, because it’s hard to find something that might interest you readers. But this time, I had no problem finding something to write about. About three weeks ago, a story appeared in the Asheville Citizen-Times on Sun day about the Mars Hill College football team. In it, “Coach” Claude Gibson really bad mouthed some of the players and totally gave a bad name to the athletic pro gram here at Mars Hill. It was stated that the quarterbacks “left their effectiveness on the practice field.” Does this not reflect the coaching of these athletes? Though the kicking game was not up to par this past season, how could he compare Melvin Dunn’s punting to Larry Brow’s. Brow had not punted since high school, and that was not even his main position. Gibson had recruited a punter last year, and prom ised him a $500 scholarship if he played 5 games. He punted once for 36 yards, the same as Brow’s average. Larry Brow was an excellent tight end, but nothing is heard of the good things that came about from last season. Gibson then complains that he does not have enough assistant coaches. No argument there, but the three he has are probably the best in the SAC-8. Without them, the team probably would have finished 1-9. In the article, Gibson states that, “what we really have here now is, in essence, a Division III program that’s going to have a hard time competing in this league in the future.” Here he fails to state that all the other colleges in our league” have the same amount of scholarships. Maybe they just distribute them more efficiently. Gibson gripes that there is not enough money in his budget, but there are ways he could trim the budget. On one road trip, a female statistician had an entire motel room to herself, while the Golden Girls were right down the hall, about 3 to a room. And one night about midnight, this same statistician was seen driving the athletic department car around campus. More than likely for her own personal use. But he still needs more money, huh? No one expected miracles this year. Everyone realized that this was a young team, and had lost many of the key players from the 1980 8-2-1 squad. This year’s team rose to heights higher than expected. Even Gibson himself stated he thought they would finish .500, and this was at the beginning of the year. There were many highlights of this season, but do you hear about any of these? No, just give me this, give me that. There is always an excuse when you lose, but .500 season is not bad at all. The thing that really clinched the article was the final statement by Gibson. • sometimes think that we would have been better off falling on our faces.” good, let’s build morale around campus and on the team. Many people on camp^ and these are people in high positions, are talking about this article, and none^| too happy. Support of the team has now dwindled down in number. People arou^ campus feel sorry for Gibson and his poor football program, and if it wasn’t fof kids, who are really super people, they would cut him out all together. But so must endure. After talking with some of the players, both named in the article not, most of them are not too happy. One even stated that he would not be back® year. Now I see why Mark Clark opted his last year •>yst( *Phanie Br It seems to me that there is one underlying factor to all of these problems. # we seem to lack here at Mars Hill is a head football coach. I always thought that head coach made the final decisions and followed through with them. And a»^ coach would be one of the first people on the practice field, not come 30 minut an hour after practice starts. All other head coaches I’ve worked with have. Hopefully this will make some people realize that there may be s changes that need to take place. ^ Basically along the same lines, what is the role of a cheerleader?
