Page Two, The HILLTOP Wednesday, September 24, 1986 Letter To The Editor Dear Sir(s): First I would like to thank you for your efforts in the return of Saturday mail delivery, and the many other projects that you are currently working towards. Secondly, 1 would like to express a current problem that has plagued Women’s Hill - especially this semester. Parking space - or rather lack of parking space - is of great concern, as many of us are now forced to walk from the cafeteria lot up the dimly lighted “hernia hill” to our dorms. We approached Campus Police as to what could be done to improve the situa tion. They said they would be happy to escort us from the bottom lots to our dorm IF we would give them the time of arrival in advance. Most times a person will not know the exact arrival time in advance, or have thought to bring along lots of change for a possible long distance call back to campus. Security then said to give them a call upon arrival. As I do not have a car phone, I would have to walk to the dorm in order to call them. I see a few possible answers to our problem, but I, as an individual, cannot pull any weight in the bureaucracy of head honchos. Most colleges and universities do not allow freshmen to have cars on campus. While I would not go that far, it would be an improvement for female fresh men to park in the Cafeteria or gym lots. If parking is terrible now, it will be horrendous in years to come. The campus needs to look to the future. Why not pave the mud slide behind Edna-Moore and Stroup? And in the mean time, ask our Campus Police to be more lenient about tickets. If absolutely nothing else can be done, assign places on the hill. Seniors should get first pick and on down the line. Each class should be in different containers, and names should be drawn at random until the Seniors’ is empty, then the Juniors’ etc. Again, if one knows where their space is located, one can plan ahead for protection. In the past few weeks several rapes have occured at UNC-A.. .most in broad daylight. The trees and foliage on both sides of the hill could conceal an assailant - easily invisible at night due to poor lighting. I thank you for any help you can give towards correcting this problem. Sincerely, Melinda Snow Anyone who wishes to change the current parking situation on Women’s Hill is urged to express your concern to our SGA President, Skip Wood.. .P.O. Box 1-C. Our semester has gotten off to a quick pace and with your help, we hope to keep the ball rolling. We hope you enjoyed the welcome back dance. It was one of the largest in recent years, with an estimated 500-600 students attending. We would like to thank Tim Thomas for the music and Jeff Gordon and P.C. Christopher for their help. After the first week of school, it came to our attention that Saturday mail has been stopped. Many students were upset over this and brought it to our attention. We got in touch with Leeny Foiles, who is in charge of the post office and found out that there were serious questions concerning the safety of the mail being brought to the post office on Saturdays. Luckily, we were able to work something out and now Saturday mail has returned. To the apartment residents: We understand that there are parking problems for apartment residents with cars. Well, we agree with you and also believe that giving tickets is not the solu tion to this obvious problem. Our Senate passed a resolution to rectify the pro- lARS HILL n about the 1 ke, or the his blem by creating more parking spferhostel schec and sent it to Dr. Bentley. Happiness is a Warm Gun lop due to th use. He sug strength, and by David Meier Staff Writer The year is 1986! It is 12:00 AM on a Saturday night. A fight has broken out at Myers Dormatory. A Mars Hill Col lege security officer is brought in on the scene! The officer gets involved in the scuffle and his 38 special service revolver goes off! An 18 year old is dead. As of September 19th, 1986, Mars Hill College security personel will be car rying guns. The incident above is fic tional, but after September 19th that fic tion could very easily become reality. A piece, strapped to the waist side of a man in blue is pretty common site on most university campuses. Yet, that does not mean that Mars Hill College has to have them. I personally do not think that any college should equip the people who are employed to protect the campus and its people with the tools of death. In during vmg would cap. Betsey 1970, several people were ki'j^ Engle coir anti-war demonstration *^uch oil Kent State University. The students ^ hitch, not killed by the bullets of Kent ^ metal security, but they were killed by sculpi which is the chief concern. In the ^^Sional ( 60’s and early 70’s, college, to people, was a serene place where ' could live in peace. The race riots Newark, N.J., the violent demonsi tions in Chicago, and the fighting Cambodia all were of concern, but HISTi far away. ( .no college shou £ equip ...people . .with tools ( death.” Every year students are raped, mugg ed, stabbed, and robbed on the cam puses which they pay a handsome fee to walk on! These incidents are to be handled by the police of the district or county in which the university is located. Mars Hill College is a small and peaceful campus. The student body on the whole is apathetic and conservative. Sure people love to party, and in some cases people even get a little out of hand, but guns are not the way to approach the matter! Every time I am reminded of f State, it blows my mind to think ' college students were shot and killei National Guardsmen on their camp' In conclusion, I would like to say* bringing guns into a peaceful, stabR vironment is like throwing a lit matcli to a wooden house drenched '' kerosene. Guns make people uneasy' frightened, and they create unneces* situations.
