Not only was he late, but he disgraced our Christian communify. He talked about sex and sexual habits (which should be a private matter), used profane language, told distasteful jokes, made fun of religion, religious leaders, prayer, and yes, even God. There were no warnings about his material and I was unexpectedly surprised. I went for an evening of fun entertainment but wound up being offended and Insulted. In humiliation, several others and myself made an exit during his act We not only stood up for what we believed, but we also showed our disapproval. If more Chris tians would let God take over their lives, concerns such as this would not take place. I am not the perfect Christian, but I believe God and respect Him enough not to make jokes about Him or those whom He has ordained to preach His word to the lost On behalf of those who left, I urge the student activities committee to please know what kind of programs you are bringing for us to watch. See what of material It contains. This is supposed to be a Christian college; tty to set an example by iethng us see and hear clean concerts. Sincerely, CMs Thomas Class of 1993 Ken Gahagan Staff Writer It can hardly be argued that running a school Is an easy thing to do, and run ning a “Christian” collaga has mora than its Share of problems. One of these problems Is “Exactly how far a college should go in Imposing the morality of Its denomination upon Its students?” I ask this question for several reasons, but the main reason Is that 1 have encountered a moral dilemma about one of the rules of this campus. Granted, the Bible does speak out against drunkenness. It plainly stales “Be ye not drunk with wine wherein is excess; but be filled with the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). But the Bible does not condemn the consumption of alcohol. Mars Hill College and other schools like ours handle the problem of drinking by simply making rules which outlaw possession of the substance on cam pus. This should take care of the problem. If alcohol is not allowed on campus then there should be no one drinking, right? Wrong. The problem that this kind of rule creates is that people who are of legal drinking age go off campus, Into Weaverville, and buy the alcohol that they want and consume It away from campus. Then, they try to drive back to campus under the In fluence of alcohol. Is It any less wrong to create a situa tion which puts a person in jeopardy of their life than It Is to allow them to drink on campus? I know that Christian col leges place a great deal of emphasis on the idea of in loco parentis, but it Is the responsibility of the family, not the col- lege, to Instill moral values. And beyond this. It Is a decision which must be mat by each person. All moral questions a «uch. If the Amerteen govemme passed a law which stated that all of o citizens must confess Jesus Christ i Lord and Savior, what good would tl do? A person must decide on his ov what Is right and wrong and live bytho^ decisions. The Bible says that you mii believe In your heart before It says an thing about confessing with your moul By the time a student reaches c lege, his Ideas of right and wrong a not complete, but they are pretty wi formed. One thing that Is in high get however. Is the rebellious attitude, something Is against the rules, chanc( are that someone will try It just to ex else their Individually and new-fouf freedom. Therefore, such rules mty, fact actually encourage people to drin This Is not a call for the repeal of tl drinking rules on campus. I am coi cemed about the problem of drlnklf and driving that these rules seem to e courage. I am calling for a joint effc between the students and the facuiy the college to discuss this and oth probiems/moral dilemmas which v have to face as a Chrlsttan college. Perhaps the answer is not in prote Ing our students from the evils of tl world, but providing a place wherein tl student can find himself or herself. If person wants to drink, that is hisAv choice. The choice cannot be dictah by the administration of the colieg However, the responsibiliy of dealir with the consequences of the action a the students and the students alone.
