MHC To Graduate
199 on May 12
Kelly McElveen '
Staff Writer
Graduation is always a huge step for
ward in a person’s life. 199 Mars Hill Col
lege students will take this step at 3:00
p.m. on Sunday, May 12 in Meares
Stadium. The change of location of the
ceremony from Moore Auditorium to
Meares Stadium comes as a request
from SGA to allow for unlimited seating.
In case of bad weather, the ceremony
will be moved indoors into Moore
Auditorium, with each graduate having
seven tickets for family and friends.
The ceremony itself will be altered
slightly. The concert band, under the
direction of Dr. Pete LaRue, will play on
Sunday instead of the choir performing
as in years past. The concert band plans
to play a patriotic concert in the thirty
minutes before the ceremony begins.
Another change involves the graduation
speaker. Ever since 1979, Dr. J. Wesley
Grayson of Laguna Hills, CA, the
college’s greatest benefactor, has ad
dressed the graduating class. Unfor
tunately, he will be unable to attend this
year’s graduation and will be greatly
missed. ,
Before the actual ceremony,
however, there will be activities in honor
of this special event. On Saturday night,
a graduate banquet will be given by the
Alumni Association, welcoming the
graduates as alumni. During this event,
outstanding seniors will be recognized
by Dr. Earl Leininger, Vice-President for
Academic Affairs. Also, the seniors will
present Mars Hill College with a gift from
the Class of 1991 and perform a skit.
After the banquet, a graduation concert
featuring the choir and jazz band will be
held in Moore Auditorium. Reservations
are required for the banquet, but not for
the concert.
Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. the
Baccalaureate ceremony will be held in
Moore. No tickets are required for this
event. The speaker this year is Dr. Fred
Bentley, president of the college. This is
Dr. Bentley’s 25th year of service as the
president of MHC.
Graduation is more than receiving a
diploma. It Is a rite of passage as seniors
from Mars Hill become the doctors,
lawyers, teachers, executives of tomor
row. Though their presence will be
missed, their examples of dedication are
something to live up to and be chal
lenged by for all the rest of us still on
“The Hill.’’
