The Student Source for News HILL Volume 66, Issue 2 • Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, NC 28754 Marching Lions Excite Crowds with "Tommy" From staff reports Once again, the "Pride of Mars HiU College," the 1992 Marching Lions, is presenting a musically ex citing, visually tantalizing show for the season. Generally presented at half-time for scheduled games, MHC’s "Tommy" is based on the rock opera origiualy created by Pete Townsend and the classic rock band "The Who." "The Marching Lions continue to be a focal point of excitemnet and energy for our college football games. Members of the band take their re sponsibility very seriously and have spent endless hours in full, sectional and individual practice to refine the 1992 show so that it will prove to be very enjoyable for the entire campus community.", Pete LaRue, the direc tor for Mars Hill College bands, said. The 1992 show was designed and arranged by Dr. LaRue, with the per cussion scored by Mr. Joey Scott Forbes. Soloists include Brian Ed monds, Shane Marcus, James Parton, Michelle Galyean, Amber Luckadoo, Stephen Whisnant, Chris McKinney and Joe Gilreath. Also featured are our marvelous mellophones and sen sational sousaphones. "We would like to thank all of the many faithful supporters fromaround our entire campus communtiy, for their continuing support and appre ciation of the work of our Marching Lions. We sincerely hope that every one will get to and see our band, and have an experience which should prove to be both musically rewarding and personally enjoyable.". Dr. LaRue commented. "Tommy": The Story "At the close of World War I, Tommy was born to a fatherless home. His father, Captain Walker, a fighter pilot, had been listed missing in action... presumed lost forever. Captain Walker, however, un expectedly returns to find his wife Mary, with another man and mur'* ders him. Tommy, shocked by this violent crimes closes his eyes and ears to the world becoming Deaf...Dumb...and Blind.... Through a series of adventures and misadventures, Tommy was exposed to the darker side of life by interesting characters such as Cousin Kevin^ a local gypsy, known as Acid Queen, and his wicked Uncle Ernie.... Tommy’s parents tried in vain to cure him of the illness which they had created. But, the boy con tinued to respond only to his unage in the Mirror and his frenetic tal ent of playing pinball. His pinball ability by this time had earned him fame and a large following. This in turn, led him to meet a local lad, known as the Pinball Wizard.... After many trials and tribula tions, his parents finally discover a doctor who finds no physiological problem with Tommy. Frustrated, Tommy’s mother smashes the Mir ror. The shattered glass cuts through Tommy’s dark and silent world. He is cured! With this cure comes a new en lightenment. Tommy believes him self to be the new messiah. His sermons bring forth the multi tudes. Ultimately, his followers rebel against his power. Once again, Tommy is isolated from the outside world.... MHC Receives $60,000 From GE to Found Math & Science Project From staff reports ACTIVITIES of our MARCHING LIONS include: September 19..."World Premiere of Tommy" show [MHC] September 26..."On the Road" with MHC Bands [Wingate] October 10 "Homecoming Festivities" [MHC] October 17 "Visiting Band Series" [MHC] featuring Mtn Heritage HS October 24 "Parent and Senior Day Salute" [MHC] October 31 "MHC Band in Exhibition" at Pisgah Band Day Mars Hill College has received a grant from the General Electric Foundation of Fairfield, CT to fund a special science and mathe matics project which will involve the college and area public schools. The cooperative venture will be called "Project LINC" (Learning through Inquiry, Network and Col laboration). The grant was announced at a civic and education leader’s lun cheon Thursday, September 10, at the GE Lighting Systems facility in Hendersonville. The prmect is one of only two in the nation funded by the GE Foun dation to improve science and mathematics education for both teachers and students. It will be ac complished by merging the re sources of a college, a corporation and public school systems m a joint academic venture. The school sys tems involved are Hendersonville City, Madison, Henderson and Yancey counties. Eight middle school and 16 teachers of math and science in the four system,as have been selected and are now receiv ing training in the project. The goal of the program, according to Susan Kiser and JoAnn Croom, both Mars Hill faculty who will co-direct the project, is to establish continued on page 5
