The Hilltop of Mars Hill College Thursday, February 10,199‘f Jennifer McKinster’s Letter from the Sports Editor’s Desk Did you watch the superbowl? Even if you didn’t watch it you must know that the Cowboys stomped the Bills. Just wait until next year. The Bills will win it next year... Not! Did she or didn’t she? Those seem to be the questions on most people’s minds these days. Did Tonya Harding know and approve of the plot to injure rival skater Nancy Kerrigan? Should Harding represent the United States at the winter Olympics in Norway? If you have an opinion on this situation I want to now it. If you think that Tonya is getting a bum rap tell me. If you think that she is guilty and shouldn’t go to Norway let us know. Send your comments to P.O. Box 5401. Meanwhile, support the rest of the Olympic athletes as they represent our country in Norway later this month. In local sports, the men’s and women’s basketball teams seem to be off to a great semester (Check out the related articles in this section). Also, if you want to add to your knowledge of an unfamiliar sport take a look at the Sports Aroimd the World column next issue. Remember to watch the Olympics and keep on supporting the Mars Hill Basketball teams. Send in your comments about the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan situation and I’ll try to get them into the next issue. Go Hillraisers! Doubleheader Split for Lions^^sket Hilltop Staff Writer As fans packed the stands for the men’s game, Jan. 26, you could sense that this would not be a repeat of last year. One bold fan even predicted a victory over a staunch Presbyteri^m Blue Hose team which won the conference last year. Mars Hill paced its way to a halftime lead of33-26 on 44 percent shooting, and it looked as if the upset was staged and ready to occur. Even with better shooting, the Presbyterian team could not catch up, and Mars Hill pulled away to a 74-64 victory. With only 10 seconds left in the game, Cedric Mansell gave the crowds an extra present with an exclamation point slam dunk. He would finish with 20 points on 8 for 12 shooting. By Large Margin, Lady Lions Crush Limestone Wday, Februj By Erik Barlik Hilltop Staff Writer Jan. 31, a Monday night at the Jungle, the fans attending the women’s basketball game between the Mars Hill Lady Lions and the Limestone Rocks sawthe Rocks get crushed. Well, O.K., they are not exactly rocks; they were bricks (they shot enough of them). Limestone shot only 31% in the first half, while Mars Hill shot 54% en route to a 49-24 halftime lead. The second half was not contest, either. Limestone just fell into a deeper hole. Shannon Curtis of the Lions had a big second half, finishing the game with 8 points and 11 rebounds (10 on defense). Lena Barber tiumed in her usual good performance with 18 points on 9 for 13 shooting, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds. Sherrell Brown impressed the fans with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Super-Sub Jackie Shelton scored 7 and chipped in 6 rebounds. It became apparent early in the second half that head coach Sylvia White could take her starters out, but that did not stop starter Michelle Johnson who only played 24 minutes. Michelle ended up with 23 points and 5 rebounds. The only suspense was provided by Jan Johnson, who the fans cheered on to score before the clock ran out. Her unselfish passing and defensive style made the suspense even greater. In the end, though, she beat the Barlik P Staff Writer ►aw Prints Do You Have What it takes to Be a tutor? EARN MONEY WITH YOUR TIME! Does anybody remember Sarah Holtzclaw, the starting guard last year who could play defense, shoot three-pointers, and run the offense to perfection? I can give you three good reasons why not: (1) Michelle Johnson knows defense: (2) Michelle Johnson can shoot three-pointers; (3) Michelle Johnson runs the Lady Lion offense to perfection. Starting guard Michelle Johnson is only a 5’6" Junior, but she plays Jordan- esque basketball. Her game against Limestone included 2 steals, 5 assists, 5 rebounds (4 on defense), 23 points and 5 three-point field goals in only 24 minutes.
