James Solari Alumni News Editor Mrs. Mary Cook Editorial Advisor - Dr. George Hemdl ’08 -- Congratulations to Philip Morgan, who was voted the fourth degree Knights of Columbus’ highest honor, for “Patriotism” at the S.C. State Convention on May 4. ’31 -- Our prayers and good wishes to Francis X. Dunn, who is suffering from a malignancy and is in the Veterans Ad ministration Hospital in Tampa, Florida. ’35 - Father Francis McGowan stopped by on his way to Florida to visit his sister. He is a priest in the Paterson Diocese. ’40 - Dr. Gilbert Farley was selected one of thirty college professors and administrators to participate in the 1974 Institute for Material Handling Teachers at Northeastern University in Boston in June. Gil is chairman of the Department of Economics and Business at BAC. ’43 - Julian McCalla came by for a visit, the first since he left school. He is now living in Fayetteville, N.C. ’48 - David Payne was recently promoted to President of American Lease Plans, Inc., based in Charlotte. It was good to see Tom Campbell, when he brought his son Michael from their home in Washington, D.C. to attend the Soccer Camp here at the Abbey in June. ’50 ~ John Beam, assistant personnel manager with Burlington Industries, Cramerton Division, spoke to Dr. Farley’s personnel management class on April 30. ’51 - It was good to see Father Become An Abbey Recruiter In these times of growing competition among colleges in the area of recruiting, some of our alumni and friends are helping us recruit qualified students. This is one of the most important contributions that can be made to the Abbey today. He is working with the mental health depart ment and with retarded children and doing parish work in Louisville, Kentucky, and sees Abbey alumni in the area frequently. ’54 — Congratulations to Mannle Bias, who has opened his own law office in Burbank, Calif. ’55 - It was good to see Dr. Jim Quinn when he and his wife stopped by to see Father Cuth- bert in June on their way home from California. ’56 - Pleasant to talk with Chuck Muller over the telephone when he called to request a list of Abbey alumni in Kentucky. Fran and Chuck now live in Louisville where Chuck is with Ford. Enjoyed hearing about Ricky Adams from Dr. Farley. Ricky is Athletic Director at Palmetto Senior High School in Miami, and he and Pat have four children - John, who is ten; Donna Marie, nine; Theresa, seven; and Rita, five. ’57 “ Joe Coyle has been promoted by Burlington In dustries to Divisional Ad ministrative Manager of Burlington Sportswear, and he, Frances, and their two sons will live in Greensboro, home office of Burlington. Congratulations, but we’ll miss you in Belmont, Joe. ’59 — Robert Lazorlk is regional group manager for Northwestern Security Life Insurance Co. in North Wilkesboro, N.C. ’60 - Congratulations to Don Johnson, who was named to the newly created position of director of industrial relations with A.M. Smyre Manufacturing Co. in Gastonia, where he and Dolores and their two children live. He has been personnel director there since 1971 and was named “Man of the Year” by the International Management Club for 1972 -73 and served as the club’s educational chairman for the last two years. It was good to see Richard Kovaks, who was down on vacation in May. Capt. Marcus Brewer has been promoted to Major and is stationed at Wertsmith AFB, Mich. ’61 - Robert Baker is agent for Connecticut General Insurance Co. in Anderson, S.C. Jim Giermanskl is in school in the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Ala. ’62 " Mike D’Angelo and his wife Jo-Ann visited the College for the first time since he graduated. Mike is business analysis manager for the in stitutional division of General Foods, and they were on a business trip to Rocky Mount-. They and their two sons, Michael, nine, and Brian, 6, live in Danbury, Conn. Mike told us that John Von Bargen is recreation director for the city of Pelham, New York, and they get together with A1 McGuire frequently when he is in New York. Congratulations to Preston McLaurin who has been named to American Olean Tile Company’s President’s Club for the second consecutive year (the first member of the Company to receive this honor) in recognition’ of his outstanding sales performance. He and Elizabeth and their four children, Preston junior, Michael, Beth, and Cathy, live in Raleigh. John Caven has joined the law firm of Coffman & Jones in Jacksonville, Florida, as of April 1. Reuben Rlgel is an attorney in Louisville, Ky., working with the Legal Aid Society. ’63 - Pat O’Leary is general surgeon and attending physician at the University of Florida and advisor for the 1974 graduating class of the College of Medicine. He won the Hugh M. Hill teaching award for house of ficers, which is the highest honor given to a house staff member at the University of Florida Medical Center. Congratulations to Patrick Gallagher, who received the Ph.- D. in Political Science from St. Louis University in May. Pat is vice president of Good Will, Inc. in Gastonia. Don Burlage identified two of the five Abbey alumni shown in the May issue of Crossroads as Danny Doyle and Steve Hodulik. How about a guess from others? It was good to see Brenda Gillespie Husemann when she and husband Dick and son Beau, one- and-a-half, visited the College in June. They now live in Xenia, Ohio, where Dick is a Captain in the Air Force stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB. ’64 - Tom Mahoney visited the campus in May. He and Florence and son Michael, almost nine, live in Rockville, Maryland. Navy Lt. James McGroarty has returned to Norfolk after a tour in Guam, Marianas Island, at Nav- commsta Guam, and is now stationed at Navseegrudet, Norfolk, Va. ’65 - John Darcy stopped by to say hello when he spoke to Mr. Dudko’s corporate Finance class (ConL On Page S)
