Homecoming at the Abbey, held September 20-22, was spiced with recollection and reminiscence, as a Homecoming parade and a 50’s sock hop set the tone for the festivities. The Saturday af ternoon parade was the revival of a Belmont Abbey tradition of the late 50’s and early 60’s, which had been dormant for several years. Gaily decorated floats and cars were prepared for the occasion by Abbey students, who also en tered the competition for prizes as clowns and marching units. A float from Sacred Heart College also competed for the cash awards. An enthusiastic crowd of area residents and students were on hand to greet the cavalcade, which boasted a kazoo band entered by the brothers of Phi Kappa Theta. The Abbey chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon won the Best Decorated Float award ' for their entry done in a red and white motif, featuring a figure ready to be guillotined and the slogan “Abbey will go a ‘head’.’’ The parade ended at the Belmont Abbey soccer field where, later that afternoon, the Crusaders defeated the Knights of St. Andrews College in the homecomirig'match by a score of 4-3. A semi- formal dance with a Camelot theme was held Saturday night. The festivities were capped Sunday afternoon with a concert by the Peter Yarrow Band. The group of musicians and vocalists featured Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame. Yarrow opened the program with a set of solo numbers recalling the folk and social protest songs of his earlier career. He then brought on the rest of the band and involved the audience in an en thusiastic, hand-clapping repertoire blending rock ‘n’ roll, Jamaican sounds, nostalgia and satire. Phi Kap Wins The Alpha Rho Chapter of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, Belmont Abbey College, recently won the first annual Pennsylvania Province basketball tournament, hosted by the chapter at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. The Abbey team competed against nine other colleges and universities in the double elimination tournament to win the final game against LaSalle College by a score of 69-53. The basketball games were part of a weekend of activities for the Phi Kap brothers who came from schools in the Northeast and South. Become An Abbey Recruiter Help us recruit qualified students.
