Myers, Sr., Class of 1957 (LL.D.) “Not many institutions the size of Belmont Abbey College possess a collection of books and manuscripts which date back to the fourteen hundreds,” stated Mrs. Jane Freeman. When our present library was opened in 1959, many valuable and rare books were moved from the former library and stored in two rooms in the new library for safety. Mrs. Freeman and the library staff began the task of restoring and cataloguing the literary valuables this year. At this date, approximately five hundr^ books and manuscripts have been catalogued. In April of 1976, the library staff discovered a family Bible and register bearing the inscription; Thomas and Elizabeth Claggett, 1840. Perhaps this event could happen only “once in a lifetime;” however, Mrs. Freeman is now pursuing the descendants of General John Newton since she has discovered a com mendation, which is dated the twenty-sixth of September, 1876, from the State of New Yiyk. How was Belmont Abbey able to possess and discover these valuable works? Mrs. Freeman speculates “that many of the books and manuscripts were donated by the Bishop of Charleston in 1942; Father Thomas Oesteriock, St. Maur’s Priory in Bristol, Vir- ^ia; and others were brou^t to the Abbey by the benedictine* prieste from Europe.” The manuscripts which have been catalogued thus far include: an “incunabula” which is a - handwritten manuscript, that dates back to the (Cont. on p. 5) A.P.O.
