Page 8 - CROSSROADS - August, 1976 INSIGHT (Continued From Page 2) Elizabethan dramatists, and how it changed under the influence of the thoughts of Calvin, Bacon, and Descartes so that reason and nature were supplanted by will as the basis for morality, material observation superseded ideal-based natural law, and the spiritual was irrevocably separated from the natural. The Weltanschauung of the Jacobean-dramatists was a product of this mutation and thus the differences between Elizabethan and Jacobean is explained by the new natural law-that which is-of the 17th. century. The study is a valuable complement to E.M.W. Tillvard’s The Elizabethan tragedy (1936), and R. Ornstein’s The moral vision of Jacobean tragedy (I960).” To be ranked with these acknowledged authorities in the field is the highest form of accolade and one richly merited by George Herndl. There is little wonder in light of these achievements that he has received lucrative offers from a number of prestigious universities to join their faculties. But there is much to wonder that he has steadfastly chosen to remain at Belmont Abbey as a busy, modestly compensated professor and department chairman! The real beneficiaries of this decision are clearly his students and colleagues on the faculty who look for ward with deep , appreciation to his continuing leadership and inspiration. ••• Mark Your Calendar for the CENTENNIAL HOMECOMING Friday, Oct. 1 & Saturday, Oct. 2 Reunion, Classmates, friends, teachers, nostalgia — will all be here if you come to join in the fun and fellowship.
