Centennial Fund Report
The Centennial
Capital Fund Campaign
is going strong. As of this
date, Belmont Abbey
College has collected
pledges in the amount of
over $840,000.00. Isn’t
that fantastic! Who
would have anticipated
such a response back in
early 1976 when the goal
of $750,000.00 was
established, and to think
we have not gone to our
alumni yet! With two and
one-half months to the
deadline, we should have
over one million. Wow!
How has this been
possible? It has been as a
result of the unselfish
generosity of our college
staff, board of advisors,
and many friends of the
college. Did you know
that the maintenance and
secretarial personnel of
the college participated
100 percent; that the
board of advisors gave
over $550,000.00; that the
monastery gave
$27,500.00!
We are now going into
the final stretch of the
campaign with a great
incentive to carry us on.
We have received a
challenge gift of
$50,000.00 from Mr.
Joseph M. Bryan. When
$950,000.00 is reached,
Mr. Bryan has offered
the $50,000;00*^ majee it
$1,000,000.00W 1^’
We have left the good
wine for last — the
alumni. In mid-
November’ the alumni
will be contacted to
participate. Some will be
reached by telephone,
some by direct contact,
and the vast majority by
mail.
Belmont Abbey
Remembers
Senator Dole,
Honorary
Alumni
President Ford’s an
nouncement of Senator
Robert Dole of Kansas as
his preference for the
Vice Presidential
nomination stirred
memories at Belmont
Abbey College, as many
recall the Senator’s visit
to the Abbey on May 16,
1971. The occasion was
the 93rd Commencement
when Senator Dole
received the honorary
degree of Doctor of Laws.
His speech to 148
graduates and a large
audience included
remarks that are timely
in 1976. Speaking about
“Politics of Con
frontation” arising from
turmoil on college
campuses in the late
’sixties. Senator Dole
said, “We must find a
way to get people in
volved in the broad scope
of America. The power of
the government by
design lies with the
people, and government
has only grown further
. from the people and less
responsive to them
because the people have
let it happen.”
Serving in 1971 as
Chairman of the
Republican National
Committee and on the
Senate Committee on
Agriculture and
Forestry, the list of ac
tivities and achievements
attributed to the Senator
included international
farmer-assistance pro
grams, help for
handicapped persons,
draft reform, and
minority business en
terprise, and he was
honored by Belmont
Abbey for his service to
people through the in
struments of govern
ment.
Eight months later, on
January 21, 1972, in a
special academic con
vocation at Belmont
Abbey Cathedral, an
