Seven elected to
Board of Trustees
Seven persons have been elected to the Board of Trustees of
Belmont Abbey College.
Newly elected are Dr. Bonnie Cone, vice chancellor emeritus,
University of North Carolina-Charlotte; Ms. Johnnie Falls, vice
president, Bank of Belmont; Fr. Martin W. Hayes, O.S.B., assistant
professor of accounting; J. Harold Lineberger, Belmont textile in
dustrialist and civic leader; Dr. James Ralph Scales, president.
Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem; Louis C. Stephens, Jr.,
president. Pilot Life Insurance Co., Greensboro; and Basis L.
Whitener, attorney and former United States Congressman,
Gastonia.
Fr. Martin replaces Fr. Anselm G. Biggs, O.S.B., chairman of the
Department of History of the college.
Dr. Cone, former acting chancellor and vice chancellor for student
affairs and community relations at University of North Carolina-
Charlotte, retired in 1973, and became vice chancellor emeritus. She
is a past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Coker College, and is
past director and president of Charlotte College, predecessor of
University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
From 1974-76 she was chairman of the board of deacons at Myers
Park Baptist Church, Charlotte and is the recipient of numerous
civic awards and citations.
Ms. Falls, a native of Lowell and graduate of Lowell High School,
has attended three summers of instruction at the Stonier Graduate
School of Banking, Rutgers University. In addition to being vice
president of the Bank of Belmont, she is assistant trust officer of the
bank. She is a past president, vice president, secretary and
treasurer of the Piedmont chapter of the Banking Administration
Institute, and is currently on its trust committee. She is a member of
the Belmont City Council.
Dr. Scales, 11th president of Wake Forest University, is past
professor, dean and president of Oklahoma Baptist University, and
served as dean of Oklahorha State University prior to assuming his
position at Wake Forest. He is active in civic organizations.
Stephens is a board member of Moses Cone Memorial Hospital
Greensboro; Salem Academy, Winston-Salem; Research Triangle
Institute, Durham; chairman of the board. University of North
Carolina-Greensboro, and others.
Whitener, a graduate of Lowell High School, received his LL.B.
degree from Duke University. He organized the Gastonia Junior
Chamber of Commerce and was its first president. He was a
member of the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1941.
Active in state politics and the Democratic Party, he was a
delegate to the 1948 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia
and was elected to the 85th and 86th Congresses. He is a member of
numerous associations and civic groups including membership to the
Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Lineberger has been active in civic affairs on local and state
levels, and is presently chairman of the board of the Bank of
Belmont. Prior to retiring in 1974, he served as a director of North
Carolina National Bank and its predecessors.
He is president and treasurer of Acme Spinning Co.; treasurer,
Linford Mills, Inc.; president. Perfection Spinning Co., and
President of South Fork Manufacturing Co., all of Belmont. He is
also president of Rowan Cotton Mills Co., Salisbury.
A native of Mt. Holly, he received an A.B. degree from the
University of North Carolina, and an M.B.A. from Harvard
University.
He is a member or former member of boards of colleges,
businesses, hospitals and business organizations. For the past 25
years, he has been a trustee of Lutheran Theological Southern
Seminary, Columbia.
Fr. Martin Hayes is a graduate of Belmont Abbey College and did
graduate work at Villanova University. He is a former treasurer of
Belmont Abbey College and procurator of Belmont Abbey
Monastery. He taught at the college from 1933 to 1947 when he was an
instructor at Benedictine High School, Savannah, Ga. until 1954. He
returned to the college in 1954.
He is also coach of the college’s golf team, which competes with
other N.A.I.A. schools.
Other members of the Board of Trustees of Belmont Abbey College

president and general manager, WBTV; J. Bynum Carter, vice
president, A.B. Carter, Inc., Charlotte; Dr. Bonnie E. Cone, vice
chancellor emeritus, UNC-Charlotte; Fr. Jerome Dollard, O.S.B.,
chairman. Theology Department, Belmont Abbey College; Edward
J. Dowd, Jr., president. Central Piedmont Industries, Charlotte;
Johnnie Falls, vice president. Bank of Belmont; E. F. Gallagher,
chairman of the board. Good Will Publishers, Inc., Gastonia; Fr.
John Oetgen, O.S.B., professor, English Department, Belmont
Abbey College; Fr. Bernard Rosswog, O.S.B., pastor, St. Micbael’s,
Gastonia; Dr. James Ralph Scales, president. Wake Forest
University; Louis C. Stephens, Jr., president. Pilot Life Insurance
Co., Greensboro; Basil L. Whitener, attorney, Gastonia, and George
L. Wrenn, president, Wrenn Brothers, Inc., Charlotte.
Sailsted To Lead Student Association,
Prince, Healy Dilloian Also Chosen

College in elections held
recently.
Jeffrey B. Sailstad has been
elected president of the Student
Association. Chosen to the
other three offices on the
executive board were Deborah
K. Prince, vice president;
Margaret A. Healy, secretary,
and Gregory P. Dilloian,
treasurer.
The officers were installed at
a dinner at the Western Steer
.Steak House in Belmont. They,
were sworn in by Timothy
Wendel, chairman of the
Student Judicial Board.
Sailstad has served in the
Student Association Assembly
as a senator this past year
during which he saw the need
for several changes. Among the
problems he sees is the lack of
awareness of the Student

FR. RICHARD BURTW has
been named the new dean of
students. He will replace Dean
Landrum Cross on June 1.

Dean
Belmont Abbey College has
appointed a new dean of
students for academic year
1977-78.
Fr. Richard W. Burton, 42,
currently an instructor in the
Department of Theology, will
assume his new post June 1. Fr.
Burton has decided to live in one
of the college’s dormitories to
maintain close contact with
s^ -lents.
Burton attended Catholic
, rsity of America,
Washington, D. C., from 1954-56
and received his B.A. degree in
philosophy and English from
Mt. St. Mary’s College,
Emmitsburg, Md. He
received his M.A. degree in
theology and religious
education from Catholic
University in 1972.
He was named instructor at
B. A.C. in 1975, after serving for
six years as assistant director
of the Office of Religious
Education for the Catholic
Archdiocese of Washington, D.
C. He also has been a college
lecturer and high school
teacher.
Association by the student body.
“One of the first things I plan
to do is let it be known that there
is a Student Association and
build support for it among the
student body. Without that
support a Student Association is
a lost cause. I plan on having a
very visible Student
Association.”
Sailstad decided to run for
chief executive because of
frustrations he felt this year as
a senator.
