Martin Hayes, O.S.B. A total of. 13 matches will be played, with home matches being played on the Forest Pawtuckett course in Charlotte. We have a young team and it will be a while before we see how well things are going to go. I’m loojiing forward to the season, though. We have a good team to work with.” The Crusaders closed the 1976 season with a 17-5 record and won the N.A.l.A. District 26 championship. Dudko was named Coach of the Year in the district and Belgassam Soussi was named District 26 Player of the Year. Four Crusaders also made the All-District team. They were Soussi, Randy Schambach, Khalid Khalifa, and Moore Asouzu. Soussi was also named to the All-South soccer team. Soussi, who finished his career with the close of the 1976 season, led the nation in scoring with 39 goals and 36 assists. He finished his career as the Ab bey’s all time leading scorer with 123 goals. “We had a good season,” commented Dudko. “We had a few injuries that hurt us in the beginning of the season, but so did other teams. I’m not making any excuses. I’m proud of the team. I just hope 1977 is as good as 1976. “We are going to have to replace Belgassam,” Dudko said. “Those will be big shoes to fill. We had some good young talent. We are going to miss him, but we have enough players to help pick up the slack. I’ll not know anything for sure until practice begins in August. A lot can happen between now and then.” The Crusaders are not having a spring soccer season this year. “The fellas worked hard this fall. 1 want them to be ready for next fall so we are just going to skip any spring tour naments,” Dudko concluded. We needed at least 15 girls, but we just didn't have them.” “With the girls we have, we will be able to compete this way,” continued Ms. Allison. “It will allow them to gain a great deal of experience and get some needed playing time. It will also give us a good foun dation for next year. I’ll have something to build with.” Ms. Allison went on to say that “I hate that we were unable to have a team. There were a few of the girls that were really interested in an intercollegiate team.” John Miller, a Plainfield, N.J. freshman, will be assisting Ms. Allison with the coaching duties for the team. Miller is the head trainer for all Crusader teams and has been supervising practice while Allison handles her duties in the Recreation Department. Softball is one of the two women’s sports being offered at Belmont Abbey College beginning this year. Volleyball was added this fall. Interest in the volleyball program was strong enough that the Lady Crusaders will play an ex panded schedule next fall. “We have several tough tests next season,” commented Allison, who also coaches the volleyball team. “We are playing more teams. These teams are all very tough.” “Getting a program started is a very difficult task,” Ms. Allison concluded. “You have to prove to everyone that you are serious about what you set out to do. People are hesitant to get into it at the beginning. ■ Once they see we are serious, the interest will grow. I’ve already had inquiries from students who are interested in coming to Belmont Abbey College and participating on one of our teams. There is a very bright outlook for in- t^collegiate sports here.” The Belmont Abbey College Crusaders tennis team is into their 1977 season under head coach Mike Reidy. They will play a 16-game schedule with the season closing on April 29-30 at the District 26 tournament to be played at Guilford College. “We have been working since January,” commented Reidy. “Most of the guys play year- round, but we really started to get in shape for the season then. It takes a lot of conditioning to be ready to play tennis. Everyone has really been working hard and I feel we are going to have a good season.” ‘‘We have several tough matches, with Catawba, UNC- Charlotte, Emory University, and of course, Gardner-Webb and Lenoir-Rhyne,” Reidy continued. “You have to be ready for every match and you can’t afford to let up. I feel, though, that we will be able to handle the grind.” The Crusaders will be playing I their home matches on the newly resurfaced courts at the Wheeler Center complex here. The resurfacing look place this fall to repair the severely cracked court surfaces. “I’m looking forward to this season,” Reidy concluded. “The team has a good attitude and I have a good time working with them, win or lose.” Please Help Us Update Our Alumni List You will notice below an expanded form which requests information we have not attempted to gather in several years. As you may surmise, we at the Abbey look upon the Centennial year 1976 as a year of opportunity for the College in many directions, and we hope, with your help, it will become also a memorable time for all Name those who have passed through. Our need for this in formation stems from (1) a sincere desire within the several departments to evaluate and seek to ^improve the quality of instruction and career preparation; (2) a renewed effort to involve alumni in a greater numbers as we plan Centennial events; and. (3) the hope that we can effectively organize a Belmont Abbey Alumni association as a working arm of the College, as well as a resource for its members. I cannot refrain from adding that we sincerely hope the response to this plea through Crossroads will be better than ever. We are eager to serve you. Home Phone. Address City State Zip.
