Alumnus Receives Silver Medal Award James G. Babb, Jr. (‘59), executive vice president of Jefferson-Pilot Broadcasting Company, is the 1978 recipient of the Advertising Club of Charlotte’s Silver Medal Award. The presentation was made to Babb at the Club’s monthly meeting at the Tower Suite on March 16. The Silver Medal Award is presented to an individual who has distinguished himself in advertising based on con tributions to his company, creative ability, contributions to the general advancement of advertising, and civic ac tivities. Babb joined Charlotte’s WBT stations in 1956 as publicity supervisor. He has been a WBT Fr. Tobin Succumbs At 77 Fr. Joseph T. Tobin, O.S.B. died of a heart attack in his home on March 18, his 77th birthday. Bom in Pottstown, Pa., Fr. Joseph attended Belmont Abbey College and received the A.B. degree in 1921. In 1924 he was ordained a priest, and in 1939 he received the A.M. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Fr. Joseph taught for twelve years at Benedictine High School in Savannah, Ga. before returning to Belmont Abbey College in 1936. During his many years here, he served as dean of men, professor of mathematics and physics, head of the Belmont Abbey Press, and prior of Belmont Abbey. Belmont Abbey College alumni recall Fr. Joseph was serving as vice- chancellor of the Diocese of Charlotte and as diocesan director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Funeral services were con ducted March 21 in the Belmont Abbey Cathedral. Abbot Jude CTeary, 0. S. B. was the prin cipal celelvant; Bishop Michael J. Begley of Charlotte delivered the homily. Burial was in the Abbey cemetery. Parents Phon-A-Thon Net *8,000 Over 18,000 will be realized as a result of pledges made by parents of Belmont Abbey College students during a Phon- A-Thon held March 18-19. The sisters of the Golden Hearts of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity made the calls under the diret^ion of the College’s Development Office from telephones at the offices (rf Good Will Publishers, Inc. in Gastonia. He became managing director of WWBT in Richmond in December 1970 and returned to Charlotte in 1972 as vice president for television. Alumni Coaches Win Titles Two Belmont Abbey alumni had their dreams come true this year as they were part of what all high school coaches hope for - a state championship. Brian Noone guided Saint John Vianney Regional Hi^ School to the NJSIAA Parochial B State Championship. Saint John Vianney, located in Holmdel, was the Cinderella team in the tournament. Entering the playoff with a 12-12 record, the Land- cers upset Saint Joseph’s, Toms River and a very powerful Bishop Eustace Prep before defeating 0*ir Lady of the Valley (Orange) foo the championship. Noone, a 1971 graduate, earned a degree in political science. He was a dean's list student, elected to Who’s Who Among Stadenta in American Universities and Coileges. a member of Pi Gamma Mu, a national honor society and a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. Kenny Szyarto is athletic director of St. John Vianney. A 1989 graduate of Belmont Abbey College. Kenny earned a degree in business and economics. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Both Brian and Kenny have been very instrumental in recom mending students to Belmont Abbey from St. John s and other schools in New Jersey. . Another Abbey Alumnus realised what being “number one” is like. Jerry Healy, a 1970 graduate, is assistant football coach at Charlotte Catholic High School in Charlotte. N. C. The Cougars defeated West Montgomery and Randleman high schools before routing Clayton42- 20 to win the Rocky River Conference 2A division championship. Jerry received a B.A. in economics and business. He was elected to Who's Who Among StadenU in American Universities and Colleges, served as president of the Inter-Fraternity council, as student director of intramurals and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Jerry is also baseball coa ch at Catholic High.
