Page 4 - (CmOSSROAUS - June, 1978 Abbey Alumnus Commissions Cuthbert Portrait Belmont Abbey College has received a painting of the late Father Cuthbert Allen, O.S.B., as a gift from an alumnus of the College, Dr. Paul Titman. Dr. Titman, class of 1938, commissioned Paul Simms of Gastonia to do the painting upon the death of Father Cuthbert last December. Currently a professor of botany at Chicago State University, Dr. Titman says Father Cuthbert com pletely changed his life while he was a student at Belmont Abbey College. Father Cuthbert, an ad ministrator and teacher at Belmont Abbey College for more than 40 years, was widely known as “Mr. Belmont Ab bey.” Evidence of his dedication to the development of the College and his concern for all its constituencies con tinues to be exemplified daily through the acts of friends and alumni such as Dr. Titman. The painting of Father Cuth bert, unveiled at the College’s 1978 graduation exercises, will be hung in the Administration Building of the College. The college, is grateful to Dr. Titman for this treasured contribution. Advisory Board Elects New Officers New officers were elected at the spring meeting of the Belmont Abbey College Board of Advisors. Charles L. Grace, president of Cummins Carolinas, Inc., Charlotte, was elected chairman of the board; Dan C. Turner, president of D.C. Turner Construction Co., Charlotte, vice chairman; and Mrs. Mary Cook, administrative assistant to the president of Belmont Abbey College, secretary. These officers, elected in April, will serve two-year terms. The purpose of the Board of Advisors is to assist Belmont Aobey College in its efforts to "improve, expand and project the services of the College as an institution serving the needs of the community in terms of its educational program.” The Board of Advisers, originally established under Abbot Vincent Taylor, was reorganized in 1956 at the initiative of Fr. Cuthbert Allen and the late R. Grady Rankin. Since that time, the Board has ren dered invaluable service to the College, not simply by way of sharing their expertise to assist in decision-making, but also in spearheading a number of fund-raising efforts in which they themselves were most generous contributors. Since the inception of the Board of Trustees in 1976, the Board of Advisors has continued to play a strong role in the development of the College, and many of its members serve on standing committees of the Board of Trustees. Beach Weekend Set For Alumni Tentative plans have been made for a “Alumni Beach Weekend” at Virginia Beach, Va. in September. The Tidewater Virginia Alumni Chapter will be the host for this weekend of "sun and fun” at one of the east coast’s nicest resort areas. The Wasl ington, D.C. and Rich mond alumni chapters will also be involved in what is hoped to become an annual event. Other alumni are also invited to join in with their family and friends. All of the activities will take place at one of the main hotels along the beach with room discounts for the group. Ac tivities and events will be finalized during the summer. This promises to be a great weekend - don’t miss it. If you may be interested in attending, send in the reply below and we will send you more information. Portrait of Fr. With some of the activities held in conjunction with Sfx-ing Weekend, the alumni were able to join those festivities, especially on Saturday when the events were held outside. A carnival tent was set up to keep the food warm, the beer cold, and the band mellow. 'The alumni were able to join the different sporting events held throughout the day, and an alumni basketball game was also played. The weekend began with a welcome social Friday evening at the Chi Rho House, which lasted until the early hours of Saturday. A class meeting was held Saturday morning with Fr. Bradley and Jay Briody, alumni director, updating the alumni. A “Sock Hop” was held Saturday evening. However, the tired group didn’t do much hopping. It was great for everyone to get back together; ten years passed so quickly. Thanks to all those who took the effort to come back. One alumnus who attended the reunion sent us the following ac count of the weekend. “I recently received a note from Tom Bledsoe. Tom said his hangover is subsiding, and that warm beer will not be a future delicacy. John Ganem is preparing to have nine frames made-one for each year he attended the Abbey. Bill Garvey and Mickey O’Connell upheld a Phi Kap tradition-they married over their heads and both were blown away during most of the festivities. Buddy Guin brought a touch of class with him from the Lake Norman area. Hope to get him back to visit again soon. Ted Hawley had a great time-someone told him all about it the following week. Oh yes. Bob Healy, the silver fox, thought he was back in day camp with the games and bug juice for all. Don “Head” Holden was still accurate from the floor during the basketball torture event. Someone overheard him in the locker room saying, “I wonder if Heavy was in the stands.” Phil Kiefer was absolutely amazed that there were areas without snow in April! A special thanks to Phil for the long journey and joyful participation in our activities and those at Phi Kap. Jack Lefaivre had baby sitting chores during the weekend, but we appreciate his visit on Saturday. Jim Nissley enjoyed the athletic events-as a spectator, however, which permitted his drinking arm the liberty of vigorous exercise. Felipe Villalon received the award for remaining exactly the same in appearance and temperament- always happy, willing to help and a joy to be with. Wayne Whitehead received the “Gerald Ford Award” for self-inflicted injuries during warm-ups for the basketball game. Ed Antosek and Paul Zbigg arrived and vanished immediately, which was a short reward for all of us. Jay Ryan was a super TKE! He connected his mug to the spill drain on the beer truck and had a great visit. Mike Collins made a special effort to be with us, even though his new arrival prevented him from participating in our activities.” Special thanks to Bob Healy and Ted Hawley for organizing the events and awards. These two people put a lot of time into setting up what was a great weekend. Finally, a special “thank you” to those members of the class of 1968 who made time to come back to the Abbey on April 21-22. All of us can make excuses for not doing things- a “tip of the hat” to those who don’t!
