Abbey Books Exhibited “The Printed Word Prevails,” an exhibit of the valuable books from the Abbot Vincent Taylor Library of Belmont Abbey College, will be on display at the Mint Museum of History, Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, Oct. 15 through Jan. 21. The books are arranged chronologically, beginning with the oldest book (1476) and progressing through the twentieth century. The exhibition also includes clusters of printing and binding equipment, modern printed forms, illustrations, types of paper and end paper, etc. “While it has been difficult getting the exhibit ready, it has also been challenging to present six centuries of man’s printed word,” commented Mrs. Jane Freeman, director of learning resources of the Abbot Vincent Taylor Library and coordinator of the exhibit. “Now that we have the exhibit ready, the breadth of the material is astounding. We want to invite everyone in the Metrolina area to visit the Museum and see our books.” Only a small portion of the Library’s valuable book collection will be on display at the Museum. The total collection includes ap proximately 10,000 volumes. The origin of some of the books is unknown. Many of them were brought by the Benedictine monks from Latrobe, Pa., who founded both the Monastery and the College. Others have been donated by friends of the College over the years. “We have all kinds of little curiosities,” says Mrs. Freeman. “I’ve never seen anything like this, and I’ve been in a lot of libraries. These books are priceless.” Br. Placid Solan, u.s.tt. Lecturer in Theology B.A., Bellarmine College; S.T.B., Pontificium Athenaeum Anselmianum. Br.
