FACULTY FOCUS
Fr. Anthony Cahill, O.S.B.,
chairman of the Mathematics
and Physics Department at
Belmont Abbey College, has
been a sustaining force at the
Abbey for many years.
Remembered as a concerned,
fair, intelligent, giving and
consistent man by students
from the days of prep to the
present, Fr. Anthony continues
to quietly get things done.
His faith in the value of a
Catholic education is witnessed
by his own education. Born in
Kansas City, Missouri, he
graduated from Catholic High
School in Hamilton, Ontario in
1931 before coming to Belmont
Abbey College to complete
requirements for his Associate
of Arts degree in 1940. He
continued his education at St.
Benedict’s College in Atchinson,
Kansas, where he received a
Bachelor of Arts degree in
philosophy in 1943. In 1955 he
was awarded a Master of
Science degree from the
Catholic University of America
to complete his formal
education.
Fr Anthony has a strong tie
'he .\bbey through
1. mrsticism, as well as
Fr. Anthony Cahill, O.S.B.
education. In 1940 he entered
the Benedictine Novitiate at St.
Vincent Archabbey, and he was
ordained a priest in 1947.
Since that time he has taught
mathematics and physics, both
in Belmont Abbey Prep School
and College. He was also the
dean of the Prep School from
1950 until its closing, and a
former chairman of the
physical science division of the
College.
In addition to his service to
the College, Fr Anthony is the
chaplain for the Sisters of
Mefcy Motherhouse of North
Carolina and the chaplain of
Sacred Heart College. He has
also done parish work at St.
Michael’s Catholic Church in
Gastonia, N.C.
A member of the American
Physical Society and the
American Association of
Physics Teachers, he has
devoted a great deal of time to
the individual study, as well as
teaching, of mathematics and
physics.
Over the years, Fr. Anthony
has witnessed a great deal of
change at the Abbey. In
reference to alumni he says,
“We mi* 5 those who have left,
and we *ish they would come
back to talk and visit with us.”
As for something that has not
changed, he maintains,
“Belmont Abbey is a good
college blessed with very fine
teachers. The large amount of
personal attention given inside
and outside the classroom
enables a student of Belmont
Abbey College to obtain a finer
education here than is available
at the larger universities.”
Personal attention is a fun
damental ideal at this college,
and Fr. Anthony has been in
strumental in the perpetuation
of that ideal.

Hold Dinner
Koanoke Reception
In Planning Stages
Several Roanoke, Virginia
alumni met recently to discuss
a spring get-together for the
area alumni. Jay Briody,
alumni director, and Jane
Shannon, admissions counselor,
met with Dave Bowers (’74),
Jeff Borthen (’71) and Michael
Kolnok (’67) to discuss the
upcoming event.
It is hoped that a reception
can be held for alumni, local
church leaders, high school
counselors, and prospective
students and their parents. The
purpose of the reception would
be to publicize BAC to the dif
ferent constituents. This would
be a fine public relations and
recruiting tool for the College in
the Roanoke area.
The help of every Roanoke
alumnus is needed if this is
going to be a success. Please
contact the alumni office (704-
825-3711) or Dave Bowers (703-
343-1186), Michael Kolnok (704-
563-2026) or Jeff Borthen (703-
774-9513).
Alumni in Savannah, (Jeorgia
decided to welcome in 1979 with
an alumni dinner. , Thursday
evening, January 4, the
Savannah alumni met at
Johnnie Ganem’s Restaurant
for a cocktail party and dinner.
Tom James (’65) organized
the evening which featured a
presentation by alumni director
Jay Briody and professor Jack
Hanahan.
A “buzz session” followed
where the alumni agreed to help
the Abbey in recruiting
students, publicizing the
College in the Savannah
community and continued
financial support.
The Savannah alumni are
planning another get together in
the spring. Contact the College
or Tom James (912)232-0211 for
more information.
Many thanks to Tom and his
wife Jerrie for their hospitality.
