BAG Up For
Alumni Award
Belmont Abbey College
has been named a finalist for
the U.S. Steel Awards
presented by the Council for
Advancement and Support of
Education for alumni giving
programs.
From a telegram received
April 12, 1979, Jay Briody,
alumni director and associate
director of development,
quoted, “Your institution has
been selected as a finalist in
the Alumni Giving Incentive
Awards Program Improve
ment Category. Now in its
21st year, the program is
sponsored by the Council for
Advancement and Support of
Education with a grant from
the United States Steel Foun
dation. Up to $60,000 in
awards will be presented this
year for distinguished
achievement in tilumni an-
annual giving.” This telegram
closed with “Congratulations
on your excellent alumni giv
ing program.”
Information requested by
the Council is due May 11,
1979. Briody believes the
awards will be announced this
summer. The award is for the
1977-78 Alumni Annual
Fund to which the Belmont
Abbey alumni contributed
$22,256. 19,500 colleges and
universities report their
results and the Council names
the finalists from these
documents.
“Of course we don’t think
of these awards during the
year,” said Briody. “We are
carrying out these programs
for the good of the institution,
and that is the reason the
alumni support the Annual
Fund. This award is just icing
on the cake. It is a tribute to
the alumni; they are the ones
who made this possible”!
With the 1978-79 Annual
Fund at $33,000 as of April 1,
1979, there is a good chance
this year’s Alumni Annual
Fund could double its 1978
figure before the May 31,
1979 deadline.
‘There is a good chance we
could reach $44,000,” observ
ed Briody. *13.5. Steel can
forget the telegram next
year,” joked the alumni direc
tor, ‘They can just send the
award”!
The Belmont Abbey Col
lege Campus was bustling
with activity during the
weekend of March 30,31 and
April 1, as nearly two hun
dred alumni and friends at
tended the activities of Alum
ni Weekend 1979.
The festivities began Fri
day evening with an informal
welcome which was co
sponsored by the Charlotte-
Mecklenburg Alumni As
sociation. The party was held
in the Piedmont Room of the
Quality Inn Motel. Many
local and out-of-town alumni
reaquainted with old friends
and classmates.
Saturday morning the
alumni met with Father
Tobin, president of the col
lege, Harry Creemers (*74),
director of admissions, and
Jay Briody (74), alumni direc
tor. During the informal
meeting. Father Tobin up
dated the alumni on the state
of the college, and the alumni
were able to ask questions
concerning many aspects of
the college.
Among the many other ac
tivities, Saturday afternoon
featured an alumni basketball
game between the class of
1969 and the class of 1974.
The class of 74, with youili
and bench strength, was con
fident prior to the game.
However, the class of 1969
dominated the contest with
speed and rebounding.
The evening activities
began with a cocktail party in
the Abbot Vincem Taylor
Library. Following the
cocktail party, the alumni
banquet was held in the col
lege dining hall. Following a
delicious dinner. Jay Briody
welcomed the alumni and
friends, and Father Tobin
ialso addressed the guests.
While the guests sipped after-
dinner liqueur (a tradition
started by Fr. Cuthbert), Jay
Briody introduced the reu
nion classes including 1974,
1969, 1959, 1954, 1949 and
1939. Bernard Doris (’29)
from Augusta, Ga.,
celebrated his 50th anniver
sary.
