BLACKWELDER Funeral services for Mr. Whitson McKay Blackwelder, who died Fri day night, March 28th, were held at the Presbyterian church at Old Fort, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. M. E. Hansel and Rev. J. C. Umberger. Mr. Blackwelder is survived by a widow, one son, McKay Blackwel der, two sisters and three brothers. Mr. Blackwelder was a native of McDowell county and had a large circle of friends. An unusually large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral services on Sunday. The pall bearers were John C. McKoy, T. E. Kanipe, A. E. Kanipe, W. R. Allison, J. A. Moody and F. M. Bradley. Out of town people pres ent were Mr. and Mrs. George Lee and Mrs. Pearl Lee Gilliam of Ashe viHe; Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Edwards, of Taylorsville; Mrs. LeRoy Black welder, of Bostic; Dr. and Mrs. B. L. C. I MISSES LOUISE PREAS AND MILDRED MATHES HONORED Mrs. Geo. E. Moore entertained Friday evening honoring her house guest, Miss Mildred Mathes and Miss Louise Preas of Johnson City, Tenn. The lower floor of Mrs. Moore's home was beautiful with i early spring flowers. 1 Tables for | progressive bridge were placed in two spacious adjoining rooms. Miss Alice Laughridge and Van Hughes were the winners of the high score prizes. The members of the "younger set" who enjoyed Mrs. Moore's hos pitality were Misses Louise Preas, Mildred Mathes, Doris Crawford, Nannie Sue Sandlin, Polly Green, Hazel Swann, Polly Garson, Alice Laughridge, Jean Hansel, Selma Finch, Mary Bestline, Julia Best line and Mary Louise Moore; Messrs. BRIDGE PARTY An enthusiastic bridge game at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Smithey on Saturday evening pro vided a group of invited guests a most interesting and delightful ev ening. Daffodils and golden-bells used in artistic profusion together with blooming potted plants added festi vity and charm to the occasion, three tables having been made up for play. High score was achieved by Miss Clyde Jennings of CHinch field and by Geo. Sandlin, each of whom received an attractive prize. Mrs. Smithey served a delightful salad course with Mrs. D. M. Mcin tosh assisting. fk' STEVENS HOME BURNS The home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Roy Stevens on Moffit Hill was burned on Thursday about noon. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens were both &way from home. A small part of the household goods were saved by Mrs. Padgett, mother of Mrs. Ste-1 vens. MRS. H. A. WESTERMANN HOSTESS AT BRIDGE The following clipping from a Sa rasota Fla., paper will be of interest to friends here: Twenty tables were in play at the weekly bridge party given yester day afternoon at the Tourist build ing on the city pier by the ladies of the Tourist club. First prize was won by Mrs. L. N. Ranson, of Kala mazoo, Mich., second by Mrs. Rowe, South Beach, Conn.; the door prize by Mrs. W. H. Langdon of Hubbard ston, Mich. The pax'ty was under the supervision of Mrs. Delia Johnson, chairman of the entertainment com mittee, who was assisted by the fol lowing ladies from North and South Carolina: Mrs. B. W. Terrell, Mrs. Rea Terrell, Miss Margaret Terrell, Greensboro, N. C.; Mrs. W. H. Ma son, Spartanburg, S. C.; Mrs. H. A. Westermann, Old Fort, N. C.; Mrs. W. M. Goodson, Asheville, N. C. BIBLE AND FLAG WILL BE PRESENTED TO SCHOOL The Junior Order of United American Mechanics will present to the Old Fort school a Bible and a Hap: of the United States on April 27th. with appropriate flag raising ceremonies. Out of town speakers will be invited to be present and address the large crowd that is ex pected to attend these exercises. The members of the Junior Order will march from the Junior hail to the school auditorium at 3:00 p. m. An interesting program is being arranged by the program commit tee for the occasion. WOODMEN SOCIAL Rhododendron Grove No. 70 gave a social in the W. 0. W. hall Mon day evening, March 24th. A large crowd of members with their friends were present. The young sters, especially, enjoyed the con tests that were given. Miss Frances Kanipe won the prize in the watch contest, Miss Frances Sherrill won in the contest, and Miss Nelle Por ter was the winner in the cat con lest. Miss Nelle Porter and Lytle Steppe, who had very recently been admitted to the grove, graduating from the Junior department, were guests of honor on this occasion. Near the closing hour refresh ments were served by four of the grove members. The next meeting of the Circle will be held in the hall on the sec ond Monday evening in April. A full attendance is desired as impor tant business will be transacted. NEEDLECRAFT CLUB MEETS Mrs. S. B. Smithey was a gracious hostess to the Needlecraft Club on Wednesday afternoon. A delicious ralad course was served during the social hour. Guests present were Mrs. J. L. Nichols, Mrs. D. A. Sil vers, Mrs. Frank Stacy, and Mrs. E. D. Rix, all of Marion; Mrs. H. C. Marley, Mrs. M. E. Hansel, Mrs. I. L. Caplan, Mrs. W. W. LeFevre, Mrs. "Will Rowe, and Mrs. G. D. Ledbetter, of Old Fort. MISS FINCH ENTERTAINS Miss Katherine Finch entertained a number of friends Thursday night with a bridge party. Those enjoying Miss Finch's hospitality were: Miss Mary Will Greene, Miss Louise Laughridge, Miss Edith LeFevre, Mr. and Mrs. 0. D. Haynes, Francis Mauney, Charles Fisher, Harrison Hansel, Van Hughes, and Robert Bryson. Miss Louise Laughridge won high score and Francis won low score. Delicious refreshments consisting of punch and cake were served by the hostess. Mrs. Annie Graham is another booster of Florida since her return to Old Fort after a two months stay in that state, where she visited the cities of St. Petersburg, Tampa, Sarasota, Lake Wales, Silver Springs, and Pasagrill Beach. She was accompanied on the trip by Mrs. W. S. Donehoo and daughter, Miss Amelia Donehoo, and mother, Mrs. Amelia Steen, of Asheville and Pittsburg. Mrs. Graham visited her daughter in Atlanta enroute home. MISS LEFEVRE HOSTESS Miss Edith LeFevre entertained the younger set on Saturday even ing. Dancing was enjoyed by the guests and delicious refreshments were served during the evening. The out of town guests were Miss Caro lyn Mcintosh, student of Washing ton High School, and Miss Eunice Wilkinson and Miss Betty Crawford of Mitchel College, Statesville. LOCAL AND PERSONAL ITEMS OF INTEREST Mrs. James Keener of Spruce Pine was a visitor in Old Fort Tues day. Misses Eula Gay and Edith Mc Neil of Bakersville spent Sunday with Miss Viola Grant. Harry Greene of Bakersville spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. Greene. Will White spent last week-end in Hendersonville. Miss Carolyn Mcintosh, student of Washington High School, spent the week-end at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cunning ham of Spruce Pine were visitors in Old Fort last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Bright Of Swannanoa were in Old Fort Sun day. Mrs. Kermit Marston of Brevard is spending several weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Stire j wait.
