GRAYBEAL A delightful meeting marked the initial gathering of the Old Fort U. D. C. Chapter for the fall and winter season on Thursday after noon at the home of Mrs. C. W. Graybeal, chapter president. At the business session all unfinished busi ness of the past year was completed and a full report of the year's work which will be sent to the State U. D. C. officers for the State meeting, was ■read. Mrs. J. B. Johnson and Mrs. P. H. Mashburn were selected as dele gates to attend the State meeting which will meet in Charlotte in Oc tober. An invitation to attend the un veiling and dedication of the memo ,rial to Jefferson Davis at "Open Air Westminster Abbey of the South" at Fletcher on Sunday afternoon was read by the president. The motion that the Old Fort chapter pay for the charter for the j children's chapter was approved by | all the members present, and an ef | fort will be made to secure this charter before the State Conven tion. OLd FORT LADIES ATTEND DEDICATION A handsome memorial to Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate State sof America, was unveiled in "Open Air Westminster Abbey ot the SoutK," at Fletcher, on Sunday afternoon. The dedication ceremon ies were under the auspices of the North Carolina Division of the Uni ted Daughters of the Confederacy, and the main address was delivered by Dr. William R. Owens, pastor of j the First Baptist church of Asheville Members of the Old Fort U. D. C. attending were Mrs. Geo. Sandlin, District Director; Mrs. C. W. Gray beal, chapter president; Mrs. M. M. Burgin, Mrs. P. H. Mashburn and Miss Gretrude Dula. TO PRESENT PLAY FRIDAY NIGHT AT AUDITORIUM "Farm Folks," a four act play, will be given at the school auditori um in Old Fort on Friday evening at 8 o'clock. This play was given here some time ago and pleased a large audi ence. It has since been presented in West Asheville with an attendance of about 200. The proceeds on Fri day night will go to the Gleaners Sunday School class of the Method ist church. The play is. presented by local talent, who have received much favorable comment on the able man ner in which they portray the differ ent characters. Everyone is invited. Mrs. Clifford Nesbitt has returned to Old Fort after spending several weeks in Murpheesboro, Tenn., the guest of Her brother and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Purdy Richardson. The play, "Country Folks", given by the Methodist Ladies Aid of Old Fort, was played to a large audience in West Asheville Friday night. Mrs. Madelyn Mashburn Taylor, who has been visiting Mrs. T. M. SENIOR LEAGUE HAS PICNIC About twenty-five members of the Senior League enjoyed a picnic at Catawba Falls last Monday after noon. Rev. and Mrs. J. L. Rayle were chaperones. Carey Hedgepeth of Lumberton, N. C., who has been visiting friends in Old Fort, returned home Monday. Mr. Hedgepeth expects to enter the school of medicine at the University of Maryland in a few weeks. Prof, and Mrs. G. B. Strickland, who have been spending the summer in Old Fort, left on Wednesday for Cleveland, N. C., where Prof. Strick land will assume his work as' princi pal of the school at that place.
