CONVICTED OF FIRST
DEGREE BURGLARY—
IS SENTENCED TO DIE
Winton — Harvey Law
rence, 19-year old negro, was senten
ced here by Judge Garland E.
Midyette, presiding over a spiedial
term of Superior court in Hertford
County, to die in the electric chair
on July 15th.
He has been on trial here since
Wednesday morning and the trial of
the case has consumed all of the week,
the negro being arraigned Monday
and court recessing until Wednesday
morning to allow time in which to
summon a special venire of 300.
Out Only Twenty Minutes
The verdict was reached after the
jury had been out only twenty min
utes. Only one ballot was required
for conviction on the capital charge
of burglary in the first degree. At
torneys naa Deen arguing tne case
since yesterday afternoon. Judge
Midyette charged the jury for an hour
and fifteen minutes, giving what at
torneys for both sides stated to be a
fair and impartial charge.
Widespread Interest
The crowd that has set throughout
the trial never moved out of the
courtroom until sentence was passed
and the negro was led back to his
cell in the county jail by Sheriff Bis
mark Scull. Not in years has any
trial in this county been of such wide
spread interest and through all the
speech making and every formality of
the capital trial the crowd has never
’given up interest.
There has been little or no doubt in
the minds of many persons attending
the trial that the negro would be con
victed of the offense with which he
was charged, that of entering the
home of F. T. Hailey, prominent
white man of Maney Neck Township,
and attempting to outrage his wife
and murder both Mr. and Mrs. Hailey.
Defense attorneys made plea
for conviction on a lesser charge, de
dending entriely upon the plea that
the negro was so crazed with drink
on the night he committed the crime
that he did not know what he was
doing. The plea made by A. T. Cas
telloe of Aulander, former State Sen
ator, was one of the strongest ever
heard in the, courts of Hertford Coun
ty.
After the conclusion of the trial
and before adjournment Judge Mid
yette paid high compliments to the
attorneys appointed By the court and
also States attorneys for the manner
in which they conducted the trial.
Judge Midyette also complimented the
citizenship of the county and section
for the restraint they had shown dur
ing the trial, and called attention
to the power of the law to handle all
situations. He took upon himself all
responsibility for the presence of sol
diers during the trial and informed
the crowd the Hertford County would
not bear the costs incident to their
stay here.

The firemen are very obliging.
They will crank your Ford, mind your

The fireman is a wonderful man.
He is supposed to know every street
in the city, every prominent building,
every railroad, garage, department
store, rooming house, prominent fa

Smiths, undlds, aunts, cousins, ne
phews, grandmothers, sons in law,
daughters in law. The fireman is
supposed to know everything and if
he fails to give you information you
wonder what he’s here for.
The fireman, being a public ser

in every reasonable manner. If there
is anything a fireman can do for you,
please ask.
iou go to bed at mgnt and can re

may have to get out several times a
night in cold, rain sleet and any kind
of weather and little he knows when
he leaves his station whether he will
see it again or his family either. He
is never thought of until there is a
big fire and somebody is saved. Then
he is a hero, while yesterady he was
only a fireman.
Lets give more thought to the Fire

troubles and we shall find them a
loyal class of fellows and good citi

His wife and children as well as |

The boll weevil had got most of the

As the farmer raised almost nothing

The farmer’s land became poorer
and poorer each year. He had never
learned to raise soil-enriching crops.
He gave all his energy to cotton and
tobacco. On the day before Thanks
giving the credit merchant sent and
got the farmers’ horses, mules and
machinery. With the land already un
der mortgage, the outlook seemed dis
mal enough.
A Thanksgiving service was held at
the little country church. The farmer
and his wife were walking to church,
for their old buggy horse was gone
along with the rest.
On their way they met a fine car
driven at high speed by a notorious
bootlegger. By moving quickly the
farmer avoided being run over as
the mighty machine roared past.
“It looks like the bootleggers ain’t
got no respect for working folks no
more!” exclaimed the farmer, a little
disquited by the peril he had escaped.
“John,” said the wife, “what on
earth have we to give thanks for this
year?”
*“I am sure thankful,” answered the
husband with emphasis, “that I am
done cursing the prohibition law, and
bootleggers will never get another |
cent of my money.”
The farmer’s wife thanked God and
took courage. T. F. F.
Attacks New Ballot
Editor, The Herald:
In my own opinion, the Australian
Ballot Law is pernicious legislation.
The integrity of our elections rests
more in the character of the election
officials than in any technical man
ner of depositing votes. As the office
is purely a public service, the $3.00
per diem being insufficient to at
tract the type of man required for
the position, the additional officers re
quirecl by the intricate machinery of
this act will be difficult to obtain.
We have trouble now in manning the
15 precincts with proper officials.
I beleive this law will ultimately re
quire at least 25 precincts, each with
four or five officials instead of the
three which operate the precnct now.
The Act has already cost this county
alone about $900 in the purchase of
voting booths (75 in number). The
requirements for polling places are
to be complied with onl/ substantially
but they will necessitate several
changes. I estimate that the total cost
of this law to Halifax County in the
coming primary and general elect ion
will be about $2000 which in my opin
ion is too large a price to protect the
secret of those few who are ashamed
to have others know how they vote.

Proper Feeding
Makes Better Flowers
There are flowers of every hue, size
and use. It requires no great amount
of skill to choose plants that suit any
location. Regardless of their great
variety, flowers have on characteris
tic in common. They dcsii'e a soil
that is well prepared and one that
contains plenty of plantfood.
Before flowering plants can pro
duce flowers they must first build
the necessary structure. A plant that
is starved for any one of the 14 es- |
sential elements of plantfood is slow
in reaching the stage where flowers
are produced. Moreover, the flowers
that are eventually produced are
small in size and few in number.
Most of our soils h«vo been de
pleted of much of their fertility, due
t olong periods of use and often of
abuse. We cannot expect to grow
large, beautiful flowers unless we
feed the plants. In order to be sure
to meet the deficiencies of your soil,
it is advisable to use a complete
scientifically balanced plantfood, that
contains all of the plantfood elements
necessai’y in their right pi'oportions
for maximum growth and beauty.
